The first piece of European silverware of the season is up for grabs as Liverpool (Champions League holders) take on Chelsea (Europa League winners) in the UEFA Super Cup clash, a game in which the Reds are favourites to win.

Both these teams won all-English European finals at the end of last season – Chelsea defeated Arsenal 4-1 in the Europa League decider before Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0 in the Champions League showpiece.

As is natural, the Champions League holders are favourites for this match following a summer where neither club was busy in the transfer window.
Despite being under a FIFA-imposed transfer registration ban, Chelsea added Mateo Kovacic on a permanent basis while Christian Pulisic has arrived from Borussia Dortmund following a deal agreed in January.

Liverpool’s side is expected to be very similar to the one which triumphed in Madrid on 1 June, and will be tipped to beat Frank Lampard’s Blues.

The Merseyside club will be favourites to lift the trophy due to their superior quality over Chelsea, who may find this year tough following the departures of boss Maurizio Sarri and several key players, notable Eden Hazard.

Liverpool are favourites to win this game and it should be relatively comfortable – a 2-0 triumph for Jurgen Klopp’s side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Liverpool’s success last season was built on a sturdy defence – reinforced by goalkeeper Alisson Becker and central defender Virgil van Dijk. Chelsea have lost a lot of attacking talent this summer with Eden Hazard and Gonzalo Higuain both departed and the Blues could be short of goals this campaign, so Chelsea to struggle to score is among the best online betting odds for the fixture. 10Bet price fewer than three goals at 27/25.

Tied into the previous bet, the Blues will find it hard to break down Liverpool’s defence in a game which may be low energy due to its timing in the season and also its location in Turkey. 888Sport’s price of 21/10 for the Reds to win to nil is worth consideration.

Head to Head

Goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah gave the Reds a 2-0 victory the last time the sides met in the league at Anfield back in April, but prior to that the Blues had been unbeaten on five occasions in the fixture.

  • Spanish clubs have won the last five Super Cups – Real Madrid have three in that period (2014, 2016, 2017) while Barcelona triumphed in 2015 and Atletico Madrid last year.
  • An English team hasn’t lifted the competition since 2005, when Liverpool defeated CSKA Moscow 3-1 after extra time.
  • Chelsea last won the competition in 1998, when they defeated Real Madrid, but lost the 2012 and 2013 editions.
  • This is the first time the game has been staged in Turkey, while next year it will be in Porto.
