Wolves vs Chelsea Premier League

Wednesday December 5th, 20:00

The Premier League has its first midweek round of fixtures for the season with Chelsea’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers one of the round’s standout ties. The visitors are favourites to win but must be wary against a side capable of upsetting the odds.

Both these sides have stumbled in recent weeks after both enjoying relatively strong openings to the campaign, with this match capable of going either way.

Wolves have picked up just one point in their last five matches – a credible draw at Arsenal – showing they struggle to break opposition teams down but can also upset the biggest sides in the league.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have also taken points from Manchester City and Manchester United this season and will only narrowly lost 2-3 at home to Tottenham.

Chelsea had been unbeaten in competitive action under Maurizio Sarri until their recent loss against Tottenham but so poor was the performance it has led to suggestions that the team personnel and shape may need altered.

Despite not possessing home advantage and Wolves having a strong record against the biggest sides in the league, the superior quality of Chelsea puts them as likely winners here.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-0 triumph for the West London side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

It is easy to forget that Chelsea have won fewer than half of their last eight league games while Wolves have already taken points against Arsenal and both the Manchester clubs. Before Wanderers recent run of four losses in five games, they had gone eight matches unbeaten domestically and they will fancy their chances of frustrating the visitors and earning at least a point here.

This is likely to be a low-scoring, cagey affair with few goals expected. Chelsea have been involved in two scoreless draws in their last eight league games while they also secured clean sheets away to both Southampton and Burnley. Wolves themselves have managed just three goals in their last five while their last 11 games have seen only a miserly 19 goals go in combined.

Head to Head

Chelsea won 2-0 at Molineux in an FA Cup tie in 2017, the last time the side’s played. The Blues have won nine of the last 10 meetings between the two, although Wolves won 1-0 in the Midlands in January 2011 thanks to a Jose Bosingwa own goal.

  • Wolves have won just two of their seven home league games at Molineux, scoring just eight goals in that run.
  • No side has conceded fewer goals than Wolves (15) this season outside of the league’s top four but Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have scored two fewer goals (12) than bottom side Fulham.
  • Chelsea were the last remaining unbeaten team in all competitions across Europe’s top five leagues until losing against Tottenham at Wembley (excluding the Community Shield).
  • However, the Blues have won just three of their last eight league games and have slipped seven points behind league leaders Manchester City.
