Liverpool will attempt to keep pace with Premier League leaders Manchester City, while Watford hope to top them with European football a possible early aim.

While Liverpool’s football has not been as free-flowing as it was last season, it has been a lot more effective. The remain one of three teams unbeaten in the Premier League this season, and have only dropped points to Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

They are beating the teams most believe they should, riding their luck against Fulham in their last outing before the international break.

Watford’s blistering start to the season has petered out somewhat, but they still find themselves seventh in the Premier League, above Manchester United and Everton.

They did however find themselves fortunate to escape St Mary’s with a 1-1 draw after controversial officiating in their most recent game against relegation-threatened Southampton.

The gulf in quality between the two will likely see Liverpool extend their unbeaten run, but Watford might provide a scare or two in a 2-1 win.

Betting Tips

None of the 22 meetings between these two sides have ended goalless, and with the firepower in Liverpool’s front three, it is unlikely this one will either. Liverpool have scored in all but one of their Premier League games this season, as have Watford with all of their home league matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will have one eye on his midweek clash against Paris Saint-Germain in the Premier League. Liverpool naming a weakened side or sacrificing key players late on could see Watford grab at least one goal.

Watford to Mohamed Salah might be what Norwich was to Luis Suarez, in that playing them means guaranteed goals. In his two games against the Hornets for Liverpool he has been involved in six goals (5 goals, 1 assist), of which four came last time he faced them.

The Egyptian will on a high after scoring a 90th minute winner for his nation in a 3-2 victory over Tunisia in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

Head to Head

Watford’s overall record against Liverpool is not a promising one. In 30 matches dating back to 1967, the Hornets have only won five. The last of those wins came almost three years ago, when as a newly-promoted side they beat the Reds 3-0. Since then, they have not won in five attempts, losing four and drawing once. Their most recent meeting ended in a 5-0 loss at Anfield, with Mo Salah scoring four goals.

  • Watford have lost 15 of their 17 Premier League matches against sides starting that day in the top two of the table, beating Chelsea in September 1999 and Arsenal in January 2017.
  • Watford have won five of their last seven Premier League home games, losing the other two against Manchester United and Bournemouth
  • Liverpool are looking to remain unbeaten in their opening 13 matches to a Premier League season for the first time since 2007-08.
  • Since a 2-2 draw with West Brom in April, Liverpool haven’t conceded more than once in any of their last 15 Premier League games, shipping just six goals in that time.
  • Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino has been directly involved in seven goals in his last five Premier League games against Watford (4 goals, 3 assists), scoring and assisting a goal in their 3-3 draw at Vicarage Road last season.
