Premier League Watford vs Chelsea
Watford vs Chelsea Premier League

Wednesday December 26th, 19:30

The Premier League has a full schedule of fixtures this Boxing Day with one of the most important taking place between top four hopefuls Chelsea and Watford in a game the visitors are favourites to win.

Both these sides have been in inconsistent form in recent weeks although there are signs for both that they are improving once again following strong starts to the season.

Watford’s victory at home to Cardiff City ended a run of six Premier League games without a win but they have won just three of their last 13 having won each of their first four this campaign.

Home form has been a particular concern for Javi Gracia’s side, who have lost four of their last six outings at Vicarage Road.

Chelsea have won only six of their last 12 Premier League outings and have lost two of the last five but recent impressive victories over Manchester City and Brighton have steadied the ship and they remain in fourth.

The visitors will be favourites to continue their recent resurgence in form despite not possessing home advantage, as they hold superior form and quality over Watford.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-1 triumph for the West London side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Each of the former Barcelona winger’s two Premier League goals this season have come at Vicarage Road including in the 3-2 win at home to Cardiff last time out. The former Everton forward also caused havoc in this fixture last season, netting in a 4-1 success for the Hornets over a beleaguered Blues side. Such odds of him netting again are among the best online betting odds available for this matchday.

This is a fixture which in recent times has produced plenty of goals – 18 have flown in across the most recent three meetings with nine goals for each side. Furthermore, Watford’s last six home league games have produced a grand total of 18 goals while Chelsea’s last five away games have an even higher rate of goals – with 17 going in during that period.

Head to Head

Javi Gracia’s first Premier League game in charge of Watford saw them humble Chelsea 4-1 at Vicarage Road last season, in a fixture which saw Tiemoue Bakayoko see red for the visitors. The meeting at Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign had proved equally entertaining, with the Blues running out 4-2 victors on that occasion.

  • Watford’s 4-1 home win over Chelsea back in January was their first victory over the Blues since September 1999.
  • Watford have yet to draw a game at Vicarage Road in the league this season – they have won five and lost four of their home games to date – the eighth strongest home record in the league.
  • Chelsea are eight points off league leaders Liverpool but are 14 clear of sixth-placed Manchester United – a third or fourth-placed finish this season appears most likely.
  • The Blues have the fourth best away record in the division with five wins and 16 points from their eight away games to date.
