Tottenham vs Southampton Premier League

The match is over.
Score: 2-1.

With neither side in particularly good form, this has turned into a game that neither can afford to drop points in or risk falling away from the top four, in Tottenham’s case, or drifting further to the relegation zone in the case of Southampton.

On paper, this should be a win for Tottenham but as they’ve shown in recent weeks, they’re becoming more and more difficult to predict in games in the Premier League.

Spurs come into this off the back of a disappointing and controversial loss at the King Power Stadium against Leicester, and will be looking to get back to winning ways in front of their own fans.

Southampton opened up the Premier League action last weekend with a loss at home to south coast rivals Bournemouth on Friday Night Football, a game that showed their glaring weaknesses.

Spurs have beaten Aston Villa and Crystal Palace at home so far this season so they’ll be looking to make it three wins out of four home games.

Southampton’s last away game was away at Sheffield United which they won 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Moussa Djenepo and a bit of VAR assistance.

The home side will be strong favourites for this game so it may be wise to side with a 3-0 Spurs win although both teams to score may as well be a good outside bet to take a look at.

Betting Tips

Spurs are favourites for this game but the odds on a high scoring victory are longer than anticipated. While the Saints will march to North London looking for a result, it may be out of their reach and this is among the best online betting odds for this round of Premier League action. 888sport have 3-0 to Tottenham as 17/2.

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect. Spurs obviously have players that can get a goal or two while Southampton have shown that despite their inconsistencies, they can grab a goal late on and in second halves of games. You’d imagine that Spurs will end up winning this one fairly comfortably but you wouldn’t bet on them getting a clean sheet, with this bet rated at 41/20 by 888sport.

Head to Head

In one of English football’s most storied games, these two have played each other a staggering 193 times, with Spurs winning 81 times, a draw being the final result 49 times and the Saints picking up all three points on 63 different occasions.

  • The first games of this fixture resulted in draws in March and April of 1897 in the old Southern League, with the first win going in Tottenham’s favour in September of that year.
  • Since 2005, Southampton have only beaten Spurs three times including a 1-0 win in 2005, a 2-1 win in 2016 at White Hart Lane and a 2-1 win in March of 2019 towards the back end of last season.
  • That loss in March was one of seven losses Spurs have faced on the south coast since the turn of the 21st century, with Spurs winning the first game of the 2000s 7-2 with Steffen Iversen scoring a hat trick.
  • The highest margin of victory in this fixture was a Spurs 8-0 win back in 1936 in the old Second Division, with Spurs fielding a player called Vic Buckingham who would later become manager of Ajax of Amsterdam and discovered the talents of a certain Johan Cruyff.
