Tottenham Hotspur will attempt to maintain their push for a top four finish when they entertain struggling Southampton at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Tottenham Hotspur have won six games on the spin in all competitions and look an excellent bet to finish in the top four of the Premier League for the fourth season in a row.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been particularly impressive at Wembley Stadium, with only the Premier League top two – Manchester City and Liverpool – leaving Spurs’ temporary home ground with three points.

With matches against Leicester City and Burnley following the game against the Saints, Spurs will be targeting maximum points from their pre-Christmas fixtures in order to stay in touch with the leading pack.

Things are much more dire from Southampton who have picked up just one point from the last 15 available on the road in the league.

Boss Mark Hughes’ job could be under threat if that run continues for much longer but he may be more confident about collecting points from Saturday’s match at fellow relegation candidates Cardiff City.

The form books seem to point in one direction for this fixture and it wouldn’t be advisable to bet against a home win, perhaps by a 3-1 scoreline.

Betting Tips

With Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min all seemingly back on top form for Tottenham Hotspur, Pochettino’s side should have no problem scoring goals. Spurs found a way past a stubborn Inter at Wembley last week and Southampton’s flimsy defence – which has shipped nine in their last two on the road – is much more vulnerable than the Nerazzurri’s.

Despite conceding plenty of goals on their last two trips away from the south coast, Southampton also managed to score against both Manchester City and Fulham. The Saints have also scored in four of their last five away matches against Tottenham Hotspur.

Head to Head

This fixture took place on Boxing Day last season and it was a festive treat for Tottenham Hotspur fans who saw their team emerge as 5-2 winners. Southampton were never really in the match, falling 4-0 behind by the 50th minute mark, with Harry Kane eventually scoring a hat-trick. Southampton last won away at Tottenham Hotspur in May 2016, with Steven Davis grabbing a brace in a 2-1 win.

  • Only Huddersfield Town and Crystal Palace have scored fewer goals than Southampton (10) so far this season.
  • Tottenham’s Danny Rose could make his 125th Premier League appearance for Tottenham Hotspur
  • Christian Eriksen needs just one goal to move into joint sixth on the list of Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time top Premier League scorers alongside ex-Saint Gareth Bale (42).
  • Victor Wanyama made 97 appearances for Southampton between 2013 and 2016 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur for £11million.
