The Premier League returns this weekend with one of the standout ties seeing newly-promoted Aston Villa travel to Tottenham, who will be once more among the league’s leading teams this campaign.

After threatening to challenge for the title last season, Tottenham’s league form suffered and they eventually recorded a fourth placed finish.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side took just 11 points from their final 12 matches of the campaign but they managed to once more qualify for the Champions League after reaching the final last term.

Spurs have invested in the transfer market this summer with Tanguy Ndombele among the new arrivals but it is unlikely the club will have enough for a title tilt this time around.

Aston Villa are back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016 relegation having won promotion via the Championship playoffs.

The hosts will be favourites to get off to a winning start due to possessing home advantage and superior quality over Villa.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 1-1 draw with the visitors earning an unlikely point should not be discounted.

Betting Tips

Spurs lost seven of their final 12 league games last season while Villa’s form was the opposite – a 10-game winning streak propelled them into the playoffs. With this in mind, the newly-promoted club to take at least a point from their trip to North London is among the best online betting odds of the weekend. 888Sport price it at an enticing 11/4.

Tottenham failed to score in three of their most recent five league games while Villa saw just 15 goals go in at both ends across their final seven matches in the Championship, including in the playoffs. These are two sides who tend not be involved in high-scoring league contests, so two goals or fewer in this encounter is likely and priced at 21/17 by 10Bet.

Head to Head

Tottenham won the most recent meeting between the sides 2-0 – an FA Cup Third Round tie back in January 2017. Spurs have won nine of the last 10 clashes between the teams but the Midlands club triumphed in North London back in 2015.
