Southampton vs Manchester United Premier League

Saturday December 1st

The Premier League recommences this weekend with two struggling teams going head-to-head in the Saturday evening kick-off as Southampton welcome Manchester United. Both sides are desperately in need of points.

Both these sides are struggling badly for form this season with respective managers Mark Hughes and Jose Mourinho under an increasing volume of pressure.

Southampton’s loss at Fulham last time out saw them slip into the relegation zone for the first time this season – they have just one win and eight points from their opening 13 fixtures.

The South Coast side are without a win in nine, a run stretching back to 1 September, and they have collected just four points in the matches since.

Manchester United have 11 points from their last six league matches which is a respectable return but they still languish in seventh spot and are now seven points from a top four spot.

The visitors will be favourites to return to winning ways in this game despite not possessing home advantage, as their superior form and quality over the Saints should shine through.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-1 triumph for Mourinho’s men would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

The French forward is a man in form and has netted six goals in his last eight United appearances, including four in his last three Premier League matches away from Old Trafford. The former Monaco striker is now one of the first names on United’s team sheet and will fancy himself against a defence who have conceded 10 goals in their last three matches.

Manchester United have traditionally been slow starters this season and have only started to improve their fortunes after the break. This could be said of their recent trips to Bournemouth and Chelsea, alongside coming from two goals down to win at home to Newcastle. Conversely, the Saints have dropped more points from winning positions than any other side in the top flight including in Saturday’s defeat at Fulham.

Head to Head

Just one goal has gone in during the last three meetings between the sides – Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game as United won 1-0 on the South Coast last season. The return meeting at Old Trafford, in late December 2017, produced a scoreless draw.

  • Southampton are one of only two teams in the Premier League (along with Crystal Palace) not to have won a home league match this season.
  • The Saints are on the league’s current longest winless run (nine games), they have the second worst attack and second worst defence in the division.
  • Manchester United’s points tally of 21 from their opening 13 league games is their worst start to a season since 1990.
  • After a third of the season, United have a minus goalless difference for the first time since 1977. That season they ended up finishing 10th under Dave Sexton with a goal difference of +4.
