Southampton vs Arsenal Premier League

Sunday December 16th, 13:30

Arsenal can stretch their unbeaten Premier League record to 15 matches when they head to the south coast to face struggling Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal left it late to see off a stubborn Huddersfield Town at the Emirates Stadium last weekend, with Lucas Torreira’s winner eventually sealing all three points for the hosts.

The Gunners are on a fine unbeaten run in all competitions which stretches back to mid-August and boss Unai Emery’s football has attracted plenty of plaudits.

However, they remain outside the top four in the Premier League after top four rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also picked up victories.

New Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will enjoy no honeymoon period in the hotseat after he oversaw a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff City in his first game in charge.

The Austrian boss has a huge task on his hands, with the Saints three points adrift at the foot of the table and without a victory since the start of September.

The form books seem to point in one direction for this fixture and the betting sites agree that Arsenal should be comfortable 2-0 winners.

This is Arsenal’s longest run without defeat in over a decade and the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng, Alexander Lacazette and Lucas Torreira are playing with smiles on their faces. The opposite is true of Southampton and they will also need time to adapt to Hasenhuttl’s distinct high-pressing style.

Amazingly, Arsenal still haven’t gone into the half-time interval with a lead in any match this season. The Gunners seem to thrive in the second half of games instead – and indeed upped their performance in the second period in wins against Huddersfield, Tottenham and Bournemouth recently.

Head to Head

Southampton and Arsenal shared the points in a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s last season. Charlie Austin opened the scoring in the third minute but Olivier Giroud salvaged something for Arsenal with an 88th minute strike. Southampton last beat the Gunners at home in December 2015 – and in some style. The Saints won 4-0 that day with Shane Long scoring two of the goals.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been involved in 27 goals in 29 Premier League appearances (20 goals, 7 assists).
  • Southampton are currently on their longest run without a win since the 1988/89 season.
  • Southampton are the only Premier League team not to have won at home this season (5 draws, 2 defeats)
  • Only four players have completed more passes in the Premier League this season than Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka (1,192).
