Both Steve Bruce and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer need a run of positive results after starting the season with some disappointing performances and outcomes.

Newcastle surely hit the nadir against Leicester City – conceding four second half goals in a gutless and defenceless display. At least, that’ll be the hope of Bruce and the Magpies’ fans – that the trouncing last weekend was as bad as it can get, and that it won’t get worse from there.

Indeed, Newcastle failed to register a shot on target against the Foxes, had less than a third of possession and faced 13 shots. The difference between the sides – vibrant, upwardly-mobile Leicester and stagnant, plumbing-the-depths Newcastle couldn’t have been more stark.

The result left Newcastle second bottom, with only one win this season. That came in their third outing of the campaign, a shock victory at Tottenham Hotspur. While Spurs are streets ahead of the visiting United, a Newcastle win here would be a surprise of a similar magnitude.

Solskjaer hasn’t quite had to deal with performances the level of Newcastle’s most recent display but it’s not been a happy time at Old Trafford this season. There’s not been much comfort away from home either – the last time United played on the road in the league, they lost at West Ham.

In fact, the Red Devils are yet to win an away game in the league this season, having also drawn at Southampton and Wolves, three teams all likely to be mid-table and lower come May. Those three fixtures form part of a dire run for Solskjaer’s side, who are without an away league win since beating Crystal Palace in February.

Newcastle may talk of a reaction to last week’s humiliation but getting a victory seems beyond them. The visitors, too, haven’t clicked fully into gear either – so a 1-1 draw is in prospect.

Betting Tips

United’s draws with Southampton and Wolves are instructive here – Solskjaer’s side struggle to break down the opposition. Newcastle are less solid than either of those teams, but they’ve got something to prove in front of a home crowd that, for 90 minutes, will get behind the players. 888Sport price the draw at 47/20.

Miguel Almiron is one of the few creative players available to Bruce, and getting more out of him has to be central to the manager’s changes. That said, the Argentine has struggled in front of goal since moving from MLS, and needs to be more clinical if he is to trouble the top bookmakers in the anytime scorer market. 888Sport price him at 9/2.

Head to Head

Manchester United won both games last season – 2-0 on Tyneside, when Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford scored, and 3-2 at Old Trafford as they came from two goals down to win in the last minute.

Newcastle’s last win was in February 2018, when Matt Ritchie scored the game’s only goal.

  • Newcastle have scored four times in their seven league games this season – the same tally as bottom club Watford.
  • Manchester United’s mixed season was encapsulated by their record prior to playing Arsenal on Monday night – won two, drawn two, lost two.
  • Newcastle haven’t won any of their last four home league games – dating back to last season. Their last home victory was in April, 3-1 over Southampton.
  • Ayoze Perez scored a hat-trick in the win over the Saints but was sold to Leicester in the summer and started in the Foxes’ 5-0 win.
