Score: 2-1.

The Premier League returns this midweek following a weekend of FA Cup action with an important clash in the North East between relegation-embattled Newcastle and title-chasing Manchester City.

This is a meeting between two sides in sharply contrasting form and with hugely different ambitions for this season’s Premier League.

Newcastle defeated Cardiff City 3-0 in their last Premier League outing having collected just two points from the five matches immediately preceding it.

That result lifted Rafael Benitez’s men out of the relegation zone above the Bluebirds, whom they now sit two points clear of in 17th place.

After three Premier League defeats in four games, Pep Guardiola’s City have now won four Premier League matches in a row and now sit just four points behind Liverpool.

The visitors will be favourites to make it five Premier League wins in a row despite not possessing home advantage, as they have vastly superior form and quality over Newcastle.

The away side are favourites to win this game and it should be relatively comfortable – a 3-1 triumph for Guardiola’s side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Each of the last five meetings between these two sides in Newcastle have had two goals or fewer – so this seems a relatively safe bet. The hosts are likely to sit deep and soak up pressure while City will not be keen to exert a lot of energy in order to win the game. Manchester United recently won 2-0 at St. James’s Park and a similar pattern is likely for this game. Unibet price it at 17/10.

Head to Head

Manchester City have won each of the last three matches between the sides including a 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the campaign. Newcastle have not defeated City in a Premier League clash since a 1-0 victory in 2005, when Michael Owen was the scorer.

  • Manchester City have won seven times and collected 23 points from their 11 away league games to date this season – the third best record in the league.
  • Newcastle have collected just 10 points from their 12 Premier League home games this season, losing eight – the third worst record in the division.
  • City have won 19 of the last 22 meetings between the two in the Premier League, with the Magpies not winning any of those fixtures.
  • Pep Guardiola’s side trail league leaders Liverpool by four points while Newcastle sit just two points above the relegation zone.
