Manchester United vs Liverpool Premier League

Arguably English football’s most historic rivalry is played out again as Manchester United meet Liverpool.

They may be the two most successful clubs in English football, but the rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool is about more than just events on the field. The two cities are historic rivalries too, and this fixture is complicated by Liverpool’s Premier League title race with Manchester City.

Indeed, United fans may be torn by who they’d loathe to see lift the title more – neighbours City, or Liverpool. They matched Liverpool’s 18 titles back in 2008-09 but have only added two more in the decade since, so a Liverpool trophy would close the gap. And City, who can already claim to be the dominant side in Manchester, will only get louder if they claim a fourth title since 2012.

United supports can at least feel more confident about this game than the December meeting at Anfield, which ended in a 3-1 win for Liverpool. Jose Mourinho was sacked shortly after and shortly after that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed, providing the catalyst for United’s season to turn around.

That result left the points gap between the teams at 19, and while it still stands at 14, United at least look ready to compete with the Merseysiders. Paul Pogba – an unused substitute at Anfield – has thrived under Solskjaer, and not coincidentally, United’s form has picked up too.

But United’s best play comes when they can counter-attack their opponents, and the same could be said of Liverpool. Someone is going to have to take the initiative and the onus will be on the home side, which could play into Liverpool’s hands.

United will nevertheless put the prospect of helping City out of their minds for long enough to give Liverpool’s title credentials a serious test. A draw is probably the most likely outcome and the best betting sites should expect goals – 2-2.

Betting Tips

United have scored 52 goals in 26 league games – exactly two per game – and Liverpool’s return is slightly better again. The visitors are stingy in defence but United are lethal on the break, and that will test even Liverpool’s sterling backline.

Towering centre-back Virgil van Dijk should be more of a threat from set-pieces, but it’s from a corner or a free-kick that Liverpool’s best chances could come. United will be organised in open play but did concede against Paris Saint-Germain from a corner, converted by Presnel Kimpembe.

Head to Head

United and Liverpool have met 175 times before, with United winning 69 times to Liverpool’s 58.

Liverpool last won at Old Trafford in 2014, through two Steven Gerrard goals and one for Luis Suarez.

Two Marcus Rashford goals delivered victory in this fixture last season, United winning 2-1.
