The midweek round of Premier League fixtures is throwing up some incredibly important matches that could swing the momentum of the title race as Manchester City host to former manager Manuel Pellegrini and his West Ham side.

While City will be the favourites going into this game it’s important to remember that West Ham aren’t slouches and will be ready to put a dent into City’s title hopes.

City come into this on a good run of form, winning seven of their last eight Premier League matches as well as the FA Cup clash against Newport and the Champions League tie against Schalke. They’ll be full of confidence and ready to take on West Ham.

The away side, however, need a win badly. They’ve gone five without a win, losing in the FA Cup to AFC Wimbledon but they did manage to secure a good draw against Liverpool in their last home outing.

In their run of seven wins in their last eight Premier League games, City have beaten Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea, Huddersfield, Wolves, Liverpool and Southampton.

While City are in good form, West Ham have lost to Bournemouth and Wolves in the league and drew away at Crystal Palace last weekend.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may be by as big a margin as many suggest and certainly a repeat of the first game earlier this season. A 4-0 triumph for Pep Guardiola’s side at the London Stadium could be on the cards, however City will likely take their foot off the peddle at 3-0. West Ham could then get a late goal in a 3-1 City win.

Betting Tips

City are overwhelming favourites for this clash so a home win carries very little risk while you’d imagine that both teams will score. Manuel Pellegrini will be intent on giving the home fans a game they’ll never forget on his return to the Ethiad, but a City win is amongst the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action. 888sport have it as 31/20 when combined with the City win.

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, due to the results that City have been picking up as of late. City have a slight tendency to score very early on before letting one in at their own goal before half time, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see that happen.

Head to Head

Under Pep Guardiola, City have an incredible record against West Ham. Pep’s played the Hammers six times and won six times with City’s last loss against the London club being under the stewardship of current West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini in 2015, a 2-1 reverse at the Etihad.

  • Since Guardiola arrived in Manchester, City have scored 22 goals and conceded just three in the six games he’s been in charge for against the Hammers.
  • West Ham haven’t kept a clean sheet against Manchester City since November of 2012, a 0-0 draw at the old Upton Park.
  • City have only lost once at home this season, against Crystal Palace, winning the other 13 games they’ve had without even drawing, scoring 49 goals in the process.
  • While a lot is made of West Ham’s form in the London Stadium, their away from is marginally worse. In 13 games they’ve lost four times, drawn three times and lost six,
  • whereas at home they’ve won five, drawn three and lost five. Marginal differences, but differences that aren’t likely to change in this game.
