Manchester City vs. Tottenham Premier League Predictions

Premier League Man City vs Tottenham
Manchester City vs Tottenham Premier League

Tottenham might officially be out of the title race after last weekend’s results but they can still have a massive say in who does lift the Premier League trophy, and they’ll have the support of the red half of Merseyside when they go to City on Saturday.

It’ll be the third meeting in quick succession between City and Spurs and maybe a source of frustration for the London club. They can’t surpass City domestically but the first leg of their European meeting at least showed that they can match them in a one-off game – it’s dropping points elsewhere that has forced Tottenham out of the running.

Mauricio Pochettino simply doesn’t have the depth of squad needed to compete on so many fronts, and the loss of Harry Kane for the rest of the season only compounds matters.

That’s not a problem Pep Guardiola has to cope with, but the first leg Champions League defeat to Spurs and the tight battle with Liverpool means that if the Spaniard does want to lift all the trophies this season, he can’t afford to tinker too much with a winning team. He needs his best players as much as possible.

The last time these teams met outside of European competition was a tight affair, settled by a single Riyad Mahrez goal early in the game. Before that, City were generally comfortable against Spurs, winning 3-1 in London in April 2018 and 4-1 in Manchester in December 2017.

Indeed, you have to go back to October 2016 for the last time Spurs beat City in the Premier League, when an Aleksandar Kolarov own goal and one from Dele Alli gave Tottenham the victory.  That was the third in a streak of three straight wins for Spurs over City in the league.

But City’s league successes should continue against Spurs here – Guardiola can make a few key alterations to his XI and still put out a team capable of keeping tabs on Liverpool with a 2-1 victory.

Betting Tips

There’s not always a lot of goals in games between these two teams, but neither side will go into the game at the Etihad Stadium looking to simply stop the opposition scoring. City have greater firepower, though, and that should win out. It’s 8/5 at 888Sport that City win and both teams score.

England forward Raheem Sterling has become a player for the big games, and after Sergio Aguero is arguably City’s best goal threat. He’s got 17 league goals so far this season – as many as Kane for Spurs, and is 5/4 to score anytime with 888Sport.

Head to Head

City and Spurs have met more than 100 times, and the record is largely even. Prior to the second leg of the Champions League tie between them, City had won 54 to Spurs’ 53, with 31 draws.

  • It’s more than three years since Spurs won in the league at City – back on February 14 2016.
  • City have scored 22 more goals than Spurs in the league this season, and conceded 12 fewer.
  • There’s a 16-point gap between Spurs and City with each having five games left to play. The 2017-18 season ended with a 33-point gap as City reached 100 points in winning the title.
  • Spurs’ last five league games have seen two wins, two defeats and a draw – their only draw of the 2018-19 league season.
