The match is over.
Score: 3-1.

Last season’s runners-up look like they’re hitting top form even earlier than last season given their performances so far this campaign, but with Newcastle’s win away at Spurs giving them confidence away at the big clubs, could this be a banana skin for the Reds?

Liverpool will be seen as strong favourites for this game and with all due respect to Newcastle, that seems fair enough, but the odds for an away win may be too good to turn down.

Liverpool have picked up four wins from four to start the season off, scoring 12 goals in those four games and conceding just three in the process.

Newcastle, on the other hand, have been performing differently. That win at Tottenham is their only win in their opening four fixtures.

Newcastle beat Spurs at the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after two straight losses at home to Arsenal and away at Norwich, while they followed up that Spurs win with a point at home against Watford.

Liverpool’s four wins have come against Norwich and Arsenal at home while picking up away wins against Southampton and most recently against Burnley.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be strong favourites for this one so a high scoring home win looks to be in order, so look at a 4-0 win if you’re feeling like a high scoring bet this weekend.

Betting Tips

Liverpool favourites for this clash so a home win carries almost no risk at all. Steve Bruce and his side will be looking to try and get in as many body blows as possible but will know that it may be impossible to break Liverpool down, and this is among the best online betting odds for this round of action. 888sport have 4-0 down as 15/2.

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, even if history suggests that it may be unlikely. Firmino’s record against Newcastle is less than stellar, but he’s due a goal against them (to use a cliche) and this may be the best opportunity to get in on the act, with this bet rated at 19/5 by 888sport.

Head to Head

These two have a lengthy and illustrious history together with 177 games being played between Liverpool and Newcastle, with the Reds winning 85 games, a draw being played out 42 times and the Geordies winning on 50 occasions.

  • The first game between the two came in 1893 when Liverpool won 5-1 at Anfield, not long after Everton moved out of the famous old ground and allowed their Merseyside rivals to take the ground for themselves.
  • Liverpool won the first three games, with Newcastle having to wait until October 1905 to register their first win, which was a 1-0 win at St James’ Park.
  • The last time Newcastle won at Anfield was a League Cup tie back in 1995 when Steve Watson’s goal was enough in a 1-0 win, but they haven’t won there in the league since 1994 when they won 2-0 thanks to goals from Rob Lee and Andy Cole.
  • Liverpool are currently on a five game unbeaten run against the Magpies, with their last defeat coming in 2015 when a Martin Skrtel own goal and a goal from then Newcastle midfielder Gini Wijnaldum gave Newcastle all three points.
