Liverpool vs Manchester United Premier League

Sunday December 16th, 16.00

The Premier League’s busy December schedule continues this weekend with league leaders Liverpool hosting Manchester United on Sunday afternoon in what looks set to be the standout match of the weekend.

The first game this season between England’s two biggest clubs takes place at Anfield as Liverpool play host to Manchester United in a game which always garners huge attention.

Liverpool sit at the top of the Premier League for the first time this season after their 4-0 win at Bournemouth last weekend was coupled with Manchester City’s 2-0 loss at Chelsea.

Despite their really poor domestic season, United’s 4-1 victory over basement side Fulham on Saturday took them up to sixth and they have now lost just one of their last nine in all competitions.

Jose Mourinho has not lost against Liverpool as United boss – with the two playing out three league draws while United won the latest encounter 2-1 at Old Trafford back in March.

The hosts will be favourites to make it six league wins on the bounce due to possessing home advantage and superior form over United, but their record in this fixture suggests it will not be straightforward.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 1-1 draw between the two teams would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

As has been shown continually down the years in this rivalry, form is often irrelevant in determining the end result. Liverpool have not beaten United across their last eight league meetings – four defeats, four draws – while United themselves have lost just one of their last nine league games. Liverpool have not hit their blistering potential this season but this could be a game in which an underperformance could be punished and a double chance on United is among the best football betting odds of this weekend.

These matches are typically low scoring – there have been no goals in either of the last two league games played at Anfield between the sides and just one in the past three meetings. They are typically cagey affairs while United boss Mourinho has a firm reputation of attempting to frustrate counterpart Jurgen Klopp by playing with an ultra-pragmatic style. Fewer than three goals in this game is a real possibility.

Head to Head

United defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford in March thanks to a double from Marcus Rashford, while last October they played out a scoreless draw at Anfield. The Merseyside outfit have not defeated United in the league since March 2014 – when David Moyes was in the Old Trafford hotseat.

  • Liverpool are now the only side undefeated in this season’s Premier League after Manchester City lost at Chelsea last weekend.
  • Liverpool have the strongest defensive record in the division (six goals conceded) while only five clubs have conceded more than United’s 26.
  • Manchester United are unbeaten in four league games and have lost just one of their last nine in the competition.
  • Liverpool have dropped just two points from their seven home games to date this season, while United have accumulated just 11 points from their eight matches on the road.
