Liverpool host Burnley as they seek to reclaim top spot in the Premier League from defending champions Manchester City.

A Merseyside derby draw with Everton the day after Manchester City saw off Bournemouth left Liverpool a point behind the champions, but with nine games to go the title race is likely to see-saw until the very last moment.

Liverpool though can’t afford to drop any more points as they need to better City’s results. Pep Guardiola’s side host Watford on Saturday evening and could be four points clear by the time Liverpool kick off against the Clarets.

But Watford are a better team than they showed when they lost heavily at Anfield a few weeks ago and the Gerard Deulofeu-Troy Deeney partnership could upset City. Liverpool would then have the chance to go back top, but can’t afford to look past Burnley either.

Sean Dyche has seen his side’s form tail off after their post-Christmas resurgence, with consecutive defeats at Newcastle and at home to Crystal Palace, but they remain the kind of obdurate opposition with which Liverpool have struggled in the past.

Indeed, the Reds couldn’t find a goal against porous Everton on Sunday but that Burnley haven’t kept a clean sheet since mid-January should be encouraging for Mohamed Salah and company.
That said, three of Liverpool’s last five games have ended in goalless draws – but it’s hard to see that happening here. Liverpool’s title challenge will get back on track, possibly with a 3-0 win.

Betting Tips

Liverpool might have recorded a few 0-0 draws recently but that also means they’ve not conceded much either. In fact, Jurgen Klopp’s side haven’t conceded in any of their last five games – something for top bookmakers to keep in mind. A Liverpool win to nil looks promising, then – with 888Sport pricing it at 8/11.

Xherdan Shaqiri was surprisingly left on the bench against Everton, given how decisive he was earlier in the campaign, and Klopp is going to need all of his attacking options for the rest of the season. The Switzerland international is a set-piece threat too. 888Sport price a Shaqiri goal anytime at 6/5.

Head to Head

Liverpool won 3-1 at Turf Moor in December, a little before Burnley pulled away from relegation trouble. Jack Cork opened the scoring in the second half, but goals from James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Shaqiri delivered the victory.

Burnley last beat Liverpool in 2016, but haven’t won at Anfield since 1974.

  • The last goalless game between Liverpool and Burnley came in 1975 – and that was also the last time the teams recorded a draw.
  • Liverpool have yet to lose a Premier League game at home this season while Burnley have only won on the road three times.
  • Only Manchester City have scored more home league goals than Liverpool, but no team has conceded fewer in front of their own fans than the Merseysiders.
  • Burnley have conceded 27 away goals this season, the same number as fifth-placed Arsenal.
