The match is over.
Score: 3-1.

With these two sides being the early pace setters in the Premier League, will this prove to be the game where Liverpool pull further away from any potential challengers or a game where Arsenal stake their own early claim to be title contenders?

Given the recent reputation of these two clubs in the past few seasons, this looks like it should be a one-sided affair but seeing as how strongly Arsenal have started, it wouldn’t seem it’ll be so one-sided.

Liverpool come into this game with three wins out of four in all competitions, including defeat in the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup, and will be seen as favourites for this game.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their start to the Premier League season, beating Newcastle away in their opening fixture and recently beating Burnley at home.

Liverpool lost to Man City in the Community Shield before getting the Premier League season underway with a win at home to Norwich, before beating Chelsea in the Super Cup and Southampton away last weekend.

The visitors haven’t won at Anfield for seven seasons, so will be looking to put that bad stat to bed this weekend too.

The Reds will be favourites for this game and a Liverpool win would be a smart bet, but don’t expect a thrashing. A Liverpool win with both teams to score looks smart, but so does a 2-1 win for the home side.

Betting Tips

Jurgen Klopp’s side are favourites for this clash so a home win carries little risk in the eyes of the bookmakers, while it is also highly likely that both teams will score. Arsenal are a much better side than the ones Liverpool would’ve faced in recent seasons, so they will give them a good run for their money, and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action. 888sport have it as 8/5 when combined with the Liverpool win.

These odds don’t seem huge considering what else you could go for in terms of scores but, in reality, how likely is it that Liverpool will smash five past this Arsenal side? A tight 2-1 win for the Champions League winners is a safe bet and one that shouldn’t be looked down upon, with it being rated at 7/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

Liverpool and Arsenal have faced off 226 times over the course of history, with Liverpool winning 87 times, a draw being played out 61 times and the Gunners picking up the victory on 78 separate occasions.

  • Liverpool won the first ever meeting 5-0 when Arsenal were still known as Woolwich Arsenal, with the Gunners falling victim to this thrashing south of the Thames in October of 1893
  • In face, Woolwich Arsenal didn’t score a goal against Liverpool until 1905 when they beat the Reds 3-1 at home in their first meeting in Division One.
  • Liverpool are unbeaten against Arsenal for eight games, their longest unbeaten run since their 14 game run from 1994 to 2000.
  • The last meeting between these sides ended in a 5-1 win for Liverpool just days after Christmas, a win that saw Liverpool stretch their lead out at the top of the Premier League before ultimately missing out on the title by a point on the final day of the season against Man City.
