With the Premier League title race hotting up each week, this edition of the Merseyside derby has the potential to be the most significant of the Premier League era, with hosts Everton trying to do everything they can to prevent Liverpool from winning their first title in 30 years.

As is the case with derby matches, you never quite know how they’ll turn out but on form alone, this could be a lop-sided affair in favour of Liverpool.

Everton come into this with just one win in their last three home games but the fans will create a massive atmosphere given the circumstances, which might play into their hands.

Liverpool’s recent away form hasn’t exactly been stellar either, especially when they’re on television. The only time they’ve won this year was when they weren’t live on television and during 3pm kick offs.

A win for the Toffees would give Marco Silva a huge boost considering the pressure he’s under so they may look to hit Liverpool early in the game and mainly try to avoid set pieces seeing as that is their one glaring weakness defensively.

Despite the derby, the visitors will still likely be favourites with sports betting sites, which isn’t a shock, but the big question will be how they deal with the enormous pressure placed on their shoulders as leaders of the title race.

A win at Goodison would be a sign that Liverpool have the resolve to see the season through at the top of the table, and heap further misery onto the mis-firing Toffees. They can triumph 2-1.

Betting Tips

Liverpool go in as favourites but it’s not unkind to say this is Everton’s biggest game of the season – a disappointing campaign can be eased by getting one over their local rivals for the first time in almost a decade, and that should lead to a strong Everton start. Liverpool should still be too strong, though.

Although there’s a lot between the teams in the table, competitive spirit and home advantage should help Everton close the gap. But if Liverpool are to beat Manchester City to the title, they’ll need to leave Goodison with three points. It’s 51/20 at Royal Panda that Liverpool win at full time after drawing at half time.

Head to Head

The meeting earlier in the season was settled late on after a misjudged attempt to clear a cross from Jordan Pickford was gobbled up by the awaiting Divock Origi, maintaining Liverpool’s impressive run against their Mersey rivals.

Overall, Liverpool have won 76 of the 191 Merseyside derbies to Everton’s 52, with 63 draws.

  • Despite the fact that derbies can throw up any results, Everton haven’t beaten Liverpool since 2010 when goals from Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill gave them a 2-0 win.
  • The last time that Liverpool won the league they beat Everton home and away, winning 3-1 at Goodison Park and 2-1 at Anfield.
  • Marco Silva have only played Liverpool three times, winning once, drawing once and losing once (earlier this season) while Jurgen Klopp has never lost to Everton, drawing just twice out of seven games.
  • Liverpool’s record away from home isn’t as strong as their home form, drawing four times and losing once while Everton’s form in front of their own fans isn’t that strong either. Six wins, three draws and five losses with 21 goals scored and 21 conceded from 14 games isn’t exactly inspiring stuff if you plan on preventing your rival from winning the league.
