Premier League Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea Premier League

All in all, it hasn’t been too terrible a week for Crystal Palace. Manager Roy Hodgson may have been pulling his hair out as his side toiled to a 0-0 draw at home to Cardiff on Boxing Day despite his side having over 30 shots.

But their away win over champions Manchester City just before Christmas will still be fresh in the mind. A win that will give them greater hope of beating fellow London side Chelsea.

The Blues avoided a second defeat in four days by beating Watford 2-1 after losing 1-0 at home to Leicester City.

Palace’s win over Man City was anomalistic only in that it brought three points, whereas beforehand they had good performances against top six teams but lost narrowly.

Expect them to build on their positive win at the Etihad with at least a 2-2 draw or 3-2 win over Chelsea.

Betting Tips

Though neither side are exceptionally well known for their prowess in front of goal, there have been over 2.5 goals in each of the last four meetings between these two sides. The leakiness of Palace’s defence coupled with Eden Hazard’s form means we may see quite a few goals at Stamford Bridge.

After a dry spell the Belgian is back to top form in front of goal, with four in his last four games, including a brace against Watford. Excelling in his false nine role, expect him to play a major part in any success they have at Selhurst Park

Head to Head

These two sides as recently as last month, with Chelsea winning 3-1 at home thanks to two goals from Alvaro Morata. Online betting sites will have that in mind, no doubt.

Crystal Palace’s last win over Chelsea was in 2017, when a Cesar Azpilicueta own goal and Wilfried Zaha’s strike sealed victory at Stamford Bridge.

The Eagles’ overall record against Chelsea is not a good one, winning only 12 of 53 encounters and beat the Blues only twice in their last nine home games.

  • Eden Hazard is the 10th different player to have scored 100 goals in all competitions for Chelsea (now on 101).
  • Chelsea winger Eden Hazard has been directly involved in 19 goals in the Premier League this season (10 goals, nine assists); the most of any player.
  • Crystal Palace have registered three consecutive home clean sheets in the Premier League for the first time since April 2017.
  • Crystal Palace mustered 31 shots in their game against Cardiff, their highest tally of shots in a Premier League game since 2003-04.
  • Chelsea have only lost one of their seven Premier League games against opponents that started the day in the top 10 this season (W3 D3), with that lone defeat coming against Spurs in November (1-3 at Wembley).
