Score: 4-1.

The Premier League festive action concludes over the New Year’s midweek fixtures with an intriguing meeting at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and a resurgent Southampton, in a game the home side are favourites to win.

Each of these sides have vastly contrasting ambitions for the campaign but both are in a similar vein of form going into this fixture.

Chelsea are aiming for a top four spot this season and are currently on track to secure it but have won just four of their last eight Premier League fixtures.

Southampton had gone 12 Premier League matches without tasting success but following Mark Hughes’s sacking, new boss Ralph Hassenhutl has secured back-to-back victories.

Maurizio Sarri’s side lost their first home game of the season the last time they played at Stamford Bridge as Leicester City grabbed a 1-0 victory.

The hosts will be favourites to pick up the points in this fixture due to possessing home advantage, superior form and quality over Southampton.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-1 triumph for the West London side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Under Ralph Hassenhutl, the Saints are now a dynamic attacking unit and scored an impressive six goals across their victories over Arsenal and Huddersfield. The South Coast side are still leaky in defence and Chelsea will look to take the initiative in this game. We should expect goals in this encounter with four or more among the best online betting odds for this week’s round of fixtrues.

The Saints are bang in form while Chelsea’s results are inconsistent of late – they have failed to win four of their last eight in the division and seven of their last 14. They are not a side who win games comfortably and the free-scoring visitors, who are full of confidence, are excellent value to earn at least a point in this one.

Head to Head

Chelsea won 3-0 on the South Coast earlier in the campaign with Eden Hazard, Ross Barkley and Alvaro Morata among the scorers. The Blues also won the FA Cup semi-final meeting between the two last season 2-0 while they came from two goals down to win 3-2 in a league encounter in April.

  • The Blues league defeat at home to Leicester ended their unbeaten across 17 matches at Stamford Bridge – a record stretching back to 1st April, when they lost at home to Spurs.
  • Southampton have picked up just two victories and seven points from their 10 away league matches this season.
  • Chelsea have won six of their 10 home league matches so far this season, collecting 21 points in the process – the fourth strongest record in the Premier League.
  • Six of the Saints 19 league goals this season came in their back-to-back victories over Arsenal and Huddersfield this month.
