Chelsea’s exciting young talent face their biggest test as unbeaten league leaders Liverpool make the trip to London for what should be a thrilling encounter.

Predictions

Having struggled against Manchester United in the opening game of the season, the visit of Liverpool gives Chelsea the chance to show what they have learned in the weeks since. Putting five goals past an out-of-form Wolves side is one thing but if the Blues are to push for a Champions League place, they need to get results against the teams at the top of the table too.

There seems to be little stopping the Reds. Even when they go a goal down, as they did against Newcastle, Jurgen Klopp’s side turn it around. Blessed with the resilience of a Jose Mourinho Chelsea side but playing the football of Arsene Wenger’s best Arsenal teams, this Liverpool squad is currently unmatched – and unbeaten.

Liverpool and Chelsea have already met this season, in the UEFA Super Cup, a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes that the Champions League holders won on penalties. Sadio Mane scored twice, starting as he meant to go on, while Olivier Giroud and Jorginho netted for the Europa League winners.

Both sides have Champions League commitments in midweek – Chelsea at home to Valencia, Liverpool away at Napoli – and that may be more of a factor for the former than the latter. Liverpool have more experience and more depth, while so much of this is new for both Frank Lampard and some of his most important players.

Indeed, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount in particular have grown in stature in recent weeks but playing Liverpool is another matter entirely. Abraham against Virgil Van Dijk in particular will be a key battle, one the Dutchman has to be favoured to win overall.

With that in mind, a battling, bright Chelsea performance could yield little but a narrow defeat. Liverpool will score and have the capacity to score a couple, regardless of how well Chelsea have attacked lately. A 3-1 away win seems possible.

Betting Tips

Four of Chelsea’s five league games this season have had both teams score, and they conceded twice against Norwich, Sheffield United and Wolves – none of whom have the attacking power of Liverpool. The bookmakers should expect goals here, and Liverpool are expected to get the majority of them. 10Bet has the away win and BTTS at 28/13.

He grabbed a brace when the sides met in August, scored in wins over former club Southampton, Burnley and got two more against Newcastle – Mane is the main man. Liverpool should get joy winning the ball back from Chelsea and hitting the hosts on the break, with Mane’s speed a potent weapon. Royal Panda have him 8/1 to score two or more times.
