Burnley vs Newcastle Premier League

Monday November 26th, 20:00

Relegation-threatened duo Burnley and Newcastle United have the opportunity to haul themselves away from the danger zone when they clash at Turf Moor on Monday evening.

Sean Dyche faces one of his most challenging seasons as Burnley manager, with the Clarets’ current five-game winless streak having plunged them to within a point of the bottom three.

Burnley drew with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium last time out – a result that was warmly received – but Dyche’s men must start to win matches if they’re to climb back up the league table.

On paper, a home fixture against Newcastle United – who have also returned nine points from 12 games – gives the hosts the perfect chance to boost their campaign.

But the Magpies are in high spirits after recording back-to-back victories for the first time since April and will see Burnley’s poor form as another opportunity to pick up points.

However, those two Newcastle wins did come at St. James’ Park and Rafa Benitez must find a way to guide his team to a first win on the road in over seven months.

It could well be a nervy night at Turf Moor with two teams who are less than sure of themselves. Expect a low-scoring draw – perhaps 1-1.

Betting Tips

Newcastle United have picked up three points on their travels this season – each of them via goalless draws. Many have judged boss Benitez to be too negative on the road – particularly as those results came against fellow strugglers in Cardiff City, Crystal Palace and Southampton. Wary of the repercussions of a defeat, Newcastle could err on the side of caution again in Lancashire.

If Newcastle United are to climb the table, they need their strikers to start hitting the back of the net. Rondon started to do his part last week, grabbing a first half double to help see off high-flying Bournemouth. The Venezuelan international tasted relegation with West Bromwich Albion last season and will want to better his tally of seven goals in the last campaign to avoid that experience with Newcastle.

Head to Head

Newcastle United haven’t won any of their last four meetings with Burnley in recent history, with the Clarets winning the corresponding fixture last season 1-0 thanks to a Jeff Hendrick goal. Indeed, you have to go back over 40 years for the last time the Magpies won at Turf Moor. A Tommy Craig spot kick gave the visitors a 1-0 win on Boxing Day in 1975.

  • Only three Premier League players have more assists than Johann Gudmundsson this season (4).
  • Newcastle United have made more clearances than any other Premier League team (374). Burnley are second (368).
  • Burnley have made the fourth-fewest tackles of any Premier League team this season, with only Bournemouth, Chelsea and Manchester City attempting fewer.
  • Only Brighton & Hove Albion and Cardiff City have made fewer passes than both Newcastle United (3,900) and Burnley (4,161) this season.
