Liverpool can restore their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, albeit maybe temporarily, if they get past the challenge of Brighton & Hove Albion at The American Express Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Liverpool missed out on the golden opportunity to move ten points clear at the Premier League summit last time out by going down 2-1 to current champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last Thursday.

With their lead cut to four points, Jurgen Klopp will demand that his players respond on the south coast this weekend – particularly with City not in action until Monday evening.

Last week’s defeat was the Reds’ first domestic loss since losing to Chelsea in May and Klopp’s side had won four in a row on the road before heading to Manchester.

Morale is high in the Brighton & Hove Albion camp, with Chris Hughton’s charges currently on a four-game unbeaten run themselves.

The Seagulls cruised through to the FA Cup Fourth Round last weekend with a win at Bournemouth and they’ll see Saturday’s game as something of a free hit.

Liverpool know that their season could turn if they suffer back-to-back defeats and they should be able to edge to a 1-0 victory down south.

Betting Tips

Chris Hughton’s side are tricky customers at The American Express Community Stadium and have only lost three times in the Premier League at their own ground since January. Top-four hopefuls Arsenal are one of the teams to experience that stubbornness, having to settle for a point on Boxing Day. Meanwhile, after the City loss, Liverpool would settle for a narrow win.

Liverpool have scored just seven of their 21 away goals in this first half of Premier League matches. Klopp’s side have also conceded just twice before the interval in games on the road this season, so betting sites could regret pricing the second period to be the highest-scoring half at 21/20.

Head to Head

Liverpool won the reverse fixture at Anfield 1-0 in August, with Mohamed Salah scoring the only goal of the game. The narrow margin of the Reds victory was surprising given that they had netted 15 in their previous three matches against Brighton. The Seagulls haven’t been on the winning side since March 1982 when Andy Ritchie’s first half goal gave them a stunning victory on Merseyside.

  • Only Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and Tottenham’s Harry Kane have had more shots on goal than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah this season (69).
  • Brighton defender Shane Duffy has made more headed clearances than any other Premier League player (91).
  • Glenn Murray of Brighton has been penalised for fouls 53 times this season – 18 times more than Luka Milivojevic of Crystal Palace in second place.
  • Just four of Liverpool’s 49 Premier League goals have come from outside the penalty area.
