The match is over.
Score: 2-1.

Two teams who began the 2019-20 Premier League season with a win meet on Saturday, as ambitious Arsenal host robust Burnley.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got the new campaign off to a scoring start with the winner against Newcastle, but it was Clarets striker Ashley Barnes who really hit the ground running with a double against Southampton.

After Burnley struggled at the start of last season – a consequence of playing in the early rounds of the Europa League – and took until September to get a first win, the comfortable victory over the Saints will have eased some concerns at Turf Moor.

The Gunners, meanwhile, didn’t field most of their summer signings, preferring to give the likes of Dani Ceballos and Nicolas Pepe a little longer to get accustomed to their surroundings. Instead, faith was put in the likes of Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson, and they responded with encouraging performances.

Burnley might be a tougher nut to crack than Newcastle, though. Sean Dyche’s side are still built on being hard to beat, and will still fling crosses into the Arsenal penalty area. The movement of Barnes, who has quietly become one of the better strikers in the division outside of the title and Champions League-challenging teams, will test the Arsenal defence.

David Luiz, who crossed London to leave Chelsea for Arsenal, could get his debut and will be the player required to handle Barnes. If the Brazilian has been brought in to offer leadership to a young Arsenal squad, this is his chance to show it.

It wouldn’t be a huge shock if Burnley scored against Arsenal, or took the lead in fact – traditionally, the style of football employed by Dyche has caused Arsenal problems. But Unai Emery has a lot of quality to call on, and Arsenal can win 2-1.

Betting Tips

Both games between Arsenal and Burnley last season ended 3-1 to the Gunners and while a third straight 3-1 Arsenal win seems to be pushing the bounds of credibility, an Arsenal win and both teams to score isn’t – and betting sites should keep it in mind. 888Sport price Arsenal and BTTS at 41/20.

Aubameyang is the main man at Arsenal but his regular partner, Alexandre Lacazette, is dangerous too. A scenario of the game being tied and Unai Emery introducing the Frenchman to get a goal isn’t out of the question, and Lacazette is Evens at 888Sport to score anytime.

Head to Head

Arsenal have won the last 12 games between these two teams – you have to go back to a League Cup game in 2008 for a Burnley victory.

Last season saw both fixtures end 3-1, and a May 2018 meeting ended in a 5-0 thrashing for Burnley, but before that these were tight affairs – five straight meetings ended with only a goal between the teams.

  • Coincidentally, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have more points at this stage of the campaign than any other Spurs outfit in the Premier League.
  • Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea are the only club who are unbeaten across all competitions in Europe’s top five leagues – after Juventus lost to Manchester United earlier this month.
  • Only Manchester City (36) have scored more goals than Chelsea (27) in the Premier League this campaign.
