Netherlands vs England UEFA Nations League Semi Final Predictions

UEFA Nations League Netherlands vs England
Netherlands vs England - UEFA Nations League

The match is over.
Score: 3-1.

The last four of the UEFA Nations League pairs the Netherlands with England it what may be the best tie of the final stage of the new tournament, with two genuinely great teams going head to head for a place in the Nations League final.

Given the talent on show, this should be a very tough match to call. Both sides have match winners and can hurt any team at any time, but with both nations reeling from having players who played in the Champions League final, will that affect anything in this one?

While the Dutch have been in a downward spiral of late, they still possess great players such as Memphis Depay, Virgil Van Dijk and Mathijis de Ligt, all players who can hurt England in different ways.

England are coming off the back of a dramatic resurrection against Croatia at Wembley, the game that sealed their place in the Nations League last four, courtesy of a late Harry Kane winner.

The Netherlands have beaten Belarus and lost to Germany so far in 2019, with another game against the Germans lined up in September while they also beat France in the group stage of this competition last year.

England won in Spain, beat Croatia at Wembley and drew with the Croatians in front of a closed off stadium, with their only loss coming at home against Spain in the first game of the group stage.

England will probably be slight favourites for this one given their performance at the 2018 World Cup, but this new-look Dutch side should not be underestimated. If you want to back England, 2-1 after extra time may be the best way to go, and that’s probably the best scoreline to back the Dutch with too.

Betting Tips

A draw at half time and England winning at full time doesn’t seem too bad with all things considered – 888sport have it as 24/5 – but you can never be too sure with this England team. They could easily turn things around in the second half, like they did against Croatia, or they could blow Holland away, like they did in Spain, but to back them to win is one of the better odds for this round of Nations League action.

But due to the tightness and closeness of this game, you simply cannot rule the Netherlands out. They’ve got good recent history of beating big teams when it matters, and you can’t imagine they’ll be lacklustre in this fixture, either, with a 2-1 Holland win rated at 9/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

There have been 33 games played between these two, with the Netherlands winning nine times, a draw being played out 10 times and England winning 14 times.

  • The last meeting between these two came in March of 2018 when a Jesse Lingard goal was enough to give England the win in Amsterdam.
  • The first Dutch win came in 1919 when they won 2-1 in what was still an amateur international, which would be their only win against England until 1950.
  • In a tournament game, England have only beaten Holland once, the famous 4-1 win at Euro 1996. Apart from that, Holland have won at Euro 1988 and in World Cup qualifiers for World Cup 1994.
  • The top scorer in this fixture is an unlikely name, Vivian Woodward with 13 goals. The only name that is instantly recognisable to modern football fans is Marco Van Basten, who only managed three goals against the English.
