Europa League Quarter Final Valencia vs Villareal
Valencia vs Villareal Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 2-0.

The second legs of the Europa League get underway this week and with a two goal advantage from the first leg and three away goals in the bag as they return home, Valencia are the clear favourites for this exciting all Spanish tie.

This could be a potentially dangerous match for Villarreal who have domestic matters on their mind but for Valencia the game poses a good chance to reach the final four without even breaking a sweat.

The home side go into this game with a Copa Del Rey final to look forward to and just two losses in La Liga in 2019, and their three away goals mean that all they have to do is sit back and soak up whatever Villarreal throw at them.

Meanwhile Villarreal are in a spot of bother themselves. Not only are they down heavily in this tie, but they have a relegation dog fight on their hands domestically, sitting just two points above the drop zone.

Valencia went through Celtic and Krasnodar in the previous rounds while Villarreal had to beat Rangers, Spartak Moscow and Rapid Vienna in the group stages, then Sporting Lisbon and Zenit in the knockout rounds.

If Valencia do win this game, it’ll be their fifth win in six games while it’ll be fifth game out of six where they failed to win, having just won this previous weekend away at Girona.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be a big a margin as many suggest and certainly no repeat of the first leg – a 2-1 or 2-0 win for Valencia would do the trick and send them into the semifinals.

Betting Tips

Valencia are overwhelming favourites for this clash so a home win carries very little risk but that doesn’t mean you can’t find good odds on correct score bets at relevant bookmakers. Villarreal will try to push early on for an important away goal but they’ll have to win by three unanswered goals and with priorities elsewhere, it may get ugly for the Yellow Submarine. Valencia to win 2-0 is rated on 888sport as 15/2

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, due to the result from the first leg and the matters outside of this tie. Home advantage should significantly shift the momentum in this game and the scoreline being level at the break before Valencia pull away in the second half is a likely outcome, rated at 19/5 by 888sport.

Head to Head

It should be no surprise that 47 games have been played between these two over history, but this is the second time that they’ve faced off in the Europa League/UEFA Cup, with a semi-final in 2004 being the first time (Valencia went through on that occasion too).

  • In the 47 games played, Valencia have 20 wins, Villarreal have 17 and 10 draws have been played.
  • The top scorer in this fixture is Giuseppe Rossi on six goals followed by John Carew on five and the legendary duo of Juan Roman Riqueleme and David Villa, both also on five.
  • The first time these two played was in the Copa Del Rey quarter final in 1993 when Valencia went through over two legs with an aggregate score of 8-1.
  • Valencia manager Marcelino has played Villarreal 12 times, winning four, drawing four and losing four while Villarreal boss Javier Calleja has played Valencia four times,
  • winning twice and drawing once, losing once also.
