Europa League Standard Liege vs Sevilla
Standard Liege v Sevilla Europa League

Thursday November 29th, 20:00

The Europa League returns this week with an important Group J clash between Standard Liege and Sevilla on Thursday evening in a game the visitors are favourites to win, although the hosts need points if they are to progress through the group.

This is a critical match with both teams vying to progress into the round of 32, with both Standard Liege and Sevilla in a three-horse race for two automatic qualification spots.

Sevilla have won three of their four games while the Belgian side have won just two of their outings, meaning the pressure is on the hosts ahead of this side.

Standard Liege sit three points behind the Spanish league leaders and Russian side FC Krasnodar, while Turkish side Akhisarspor, who have lost all four games, have been eliminated.

Sevilla won the opening group game between the sides 5-1 in Andalusia, meaning that if these two finish level on points it would take a big win for the Belgian side to gain a head-to-head advantage.

The visitors will be favourites to make it four European wins out of five due to superior form and quality over Standard, but the game will likely be closely fought.

The away side are favourites to win this game but realistically they know a draw will all-but-clinch their place in the last 32, so a 1-1 stalemate seems a likely outcome from the game.

Betting Tips

This bet offers value as the last time the sides met, it finished 5-1 to Sevilla but this match should produce a very different pattern. Only seven goals have gone in across Sevilla’s last seven domestic matches while Standard Liege have kept back-to-back clean sheets. A cagey encounter is likely in this game with the hosts and visitors both content with a low-scoring affair.

The Portugal international striker is in fantastic form this season – netting eight goals in 12 La Liga outings and he will be keen to get off the mark in the Europa League in this clash. He scored an impressive goals in this competition last season whilst at Milan and the previous campaign, he netted five Champions League goals for FC Porto.

Head to Head

This will be the fifth time the sides have met in European competition. Back in September, Sevilla ran out comfortable 5-1 winners while four years earlier, they won the same fixture 3-1 following a 0-0 draw in Liege. Back in 2008, Standard recorded their only victory in the fixture – also in the Europa League – with a 1-0 win in Belgium.

  • Sevilla are undefeated in their last seven matches in all competitions and currently top La Liga – they have not lifted a league title since 1946.
  • The Andalusian club have lifted the Europa League title more than any other club – winning the competition five times between 2006 and 2016.
  • Standard Liege currently languish in sixth position in the Belgian top flight, nine points behind league leaders Genk and with just seven wins from 16 league games.
  • The Belgian club have won each of their last two games to nil – against Kortrijk and Eupen – ending a run of three consecutive defeats.
