Score: 0-1.

The Europa League returns with an intriguing last 32 clash between Portuguese giants Sporting CP and Spanish side Villarreal, who are struggling badly in domestic competition this season.

Neither of these sides are enjoying their seasons to date, with both underperforming domestically and to whom a European run could bring relief.

Sporting currently sit fourth in the Portuguese top flight having lost five and drawn three of their opening 20 rounds of matches.

Villarreal’s situation in Spain is much more desperate, with just three wins from their opening 23 league matches they sit second from bottom in La Liga.

They sacked coach Javi Calleja only to reappoint him 50 days later with their side sitting four points from safety, although they have drawn 11 of their league games.

The hosts will be favourites to take an advantage in the tie due to possessing home advantage, and at present they hold superior form and quality over Villarreal.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-1 triumph for the Lisbon-based side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

The Dutch striker has suffered injury problems this season but has still managed to find the net an incredible 19 times in just 20 starts. Dost hit a remarkable 70 goals across the previous two seasons for Sporting and he will once again be looking to add to his impressive tallies in this clash. This is among the best online betting odds for this round of action and is 13/10 at 888Sport.

Both these sides progressed through their Europa League groups with 16 goals going in across their six matches for each side. There is plenty of firepower on show for both sides such as Bas Dost, Carlos Bacca and Gerard Moreno, and this should be an exciting game with plenty of opportunities. It’s Evens at Unibet.

  • Sporting CP have been in ominous home form this campaign, winning nine of their 11 home league games with their only defeat coming against Benfica – a 2-4 reverse earlier this month.
  • Sporting CP reached the quarter-final stage of last season’s competition before crashing out to eventual competition winners Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate.
  • Villarreal exited the competition at this stage last season, suffering a 4-1 aggregate loss against Olympique de Lyonnais.
