Europa League Rennes vs Real Betis
Rennes vs Real Betis Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 3-3.

Real Betis’ Europa League visit to Rennes is one of the most intriguing fixtures of the first knockout round, with both sides likely to feel they can win it.

Rennes only just made it through to the last 32 having lost three of their six Europa League group games, including three of their first four.

Julien Stephan’s side currently are 10th in Ligue 1 with 33 points from their opening 23 rounds of matches but they sit just four points from a top four spot.

Real Betis impressed in the group stages as they topped a tough group including Milan and Olympiakos – winning three and drawing three of their matches.

The Seville-based club are currently in sixth place in La Liga and are on course to once again qualify for a European spot next season.

The visitors will be slight favourites to take an advantage in this tie despite not possessing home advantage, as they hold superior form and quality over Rennes.

The away side are narrow favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 1-0 triumph for Quique Setien’s side would appear a likely outcome from it.

  • Betis have won just three times on the road in La Liga this season and taken just 11 points from 10 games, but one of those victories was a memorable 4-3 defeat of Barcelona.
  • The last time Betis were in the knockout stages of European competition was the 2013/14 campaign – when they lost the Europa League quarter-final to city rivals Sevilla in a penalty shootout.
  • This will be Rennes’ first ever match in a Europa League knockout round and is their first season in European football in eight campaigns.
