Europa League Real Betis vs Rennes
Betis vs Rennes Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 1-3.

The second legs of the Europa League first knockout round are played this week although there is big advantage to Real Betis in this game following the three away goals they scored in the first leg, Rennes are just as talented a team and know that they can win this game and advance to the next round.

This has the potential to be a very exciting game between two exciting teams – just like the first leg – but defensive instincts may kick in if either side concedes early on.

Hosts Betis have been in iffy form as of late in La Liga and in the Copa Del Rey semi-finals. Since beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 at home in early February, they’ve failed to win any of their next four, drawing three and losing away at Leganes.

Rennes, on the other hand, have just had a slight downturn in fortunes recently. The draw against Betis was followed up by a loss away at Reims, with these two results ending a run of three consecutive Ligue 1 games.

Betis didn’t lose a single game in the group stage, coming away unbeaten against Milan, Dudelange and Olympiacos, conceding just twice (both against Milan)

The visitors just about escaped their group following losses against Astana and a double header against Kyiv, but wins home and away against Jabolnec and a home win against Astana saw them qualify.

The home side will be favourites going into this one due to their first leg trio of goals, but Rennes will take solace in knowing that Betis have conceded 15 goals in 13 home matches in La Liga this season. Rennes can score but Betis will score more – 2-1 to the Spanish side.

Betting Tips

Betis will be favourites for this clash so a home win carries little risk while it is also highly likely that both teams will score. Rennes will be intent on giving Betis a good run for their money, just like in the first leg and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action.

These are big odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, due to the result earlier this month making it incredibly difficult for Rennes to advance on away goals. Home advantage should significantly shift the momentum in this game and the scoreline being in Betis’ favour at the break before Rennes attempt a miraculous recovery in the second 45 minutes.

Head to Head

The first leg clash was actually the first time these two have ever met, so history will be made with whoever wins this tie, which is surprising considering the history of the two clubs.

  • Betis’ home form in La Liga will probably give Rennes some hope but their form in the Europa League has been more or less perfect. Three games, two wins and a draw plus just the one goal conceded means Rennes face an uphill battle to go through.
  • Two of the three group stage losses that Rennes had were away from home and in Ligue 1 they’ve lost more games (6) than they’ve won (4) on their travels.
  • Betis have only scored three or more goals four times in La Liga this season so whether we will see another six or more goal thriller remains to be seen, while Rennes have done the same twice in Ligue 1.
  • The home side have only conceded three or more goals at home in the league twice – one of which was the opening game of the season – so it seems very unlikely that the same will happen here.
