Rapid Wien vs Rangers Europa League Predictions

Rapid Wien vs Rangers Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 1-0.

Group G is still wide open. Any of Rangers, Rapid Wien, Villarreal or Spartak Moscow can go out or go through to round 32 of the Europa League.

It is a big week for Rapid Wien, as after hosting Rangers they play Austria Wien in the Vienna derby. Having finished third in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, they currently sit in eighth already 22 points off league leaders Rangers.

A win is the best way to see them go through as even a draw may not be enough if Spartak Moscow beat Villarreal and a loss ensures their exit.

Rangers lost a little ground on Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic when they drew 1-1 to Dundee but could one-up them if they qualify for the Round of 32.
As always in football, a win is the best course of action for them, as even a draw holds not guarantee of qualification, unless there is a similar score line in the group’s other match.

And that is how the match should play out, maybe 0-0 or a 1-0 win. Either way it should be a tight match.

Betting Tips

Rapid are unbeaten in seven European home games and have a great home record in the group stages of the Europa League. But they haven’t scored a lot in the process, drawing blanks in their last three home games in all competitions.

Given the predicament both these sides find themselves in, the match will naturally be tight as a draw may see Rapid through. Moreover, none of the last four games either side have played have been decided by one goal or less, which sports betting sites should be aware of.

Head to Head

Alfredo Morelos scored twice as Rangers won 3-1 at home when they played Rapid Wien earlier in the group stage.

Other than that match, their only other meeting was all the way back in 1964, with Rangers winning twice in the first round of the European Cup.

The Scottish club’s overall record against Austrian clubs is good, winning all but one of their six games against Wien, Grazer AK and Sturm Graz.

  • Rapid Wien have lost 25 Europa League matches since the competition was rebranded in 2009/10, more than any other side.
  • Rangers have won just one of their last 19 away games in European competition (including qualifiers), a 1-0 win at Croatian side NK Osijek in qualifying for this season’s Europa League.
  • Rangers’ 3-1 win over Rapid Wien at Ibrox in October remain their only ever victory on the Europa League since the competition’s rebrand (P9 W1 D6 L2)
  • Rangers have lost only once at home this season in 16 games this season.
  • They are also on a run of 12 home matches without defeat in the UEFA Europa League group stage (W7 D5), since going down 0-4 to Bayer Leverkusen on matchday three in 2012/13.
