Rapid Wien vs Inter Milan Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 0-1.

The first legs of the Europa League knockout rounds are played this week although there is some certainty over who the favourites are for this game as Italian giants Inter Milan travel to face Rapid Wien of Austria.

On the face of things, this has the potential to look like a mismatch but with Inter’s struggles under the spotlight, this might be the time for Wien to strike.

Rapid Wien are currently sitting in eighth place in the Austrian Bundesliga having picked up just 20 points from their 18 games, and are coming into this game off the back of a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Austria Vienna.

Inter come into this one third in Serie A but some way off of Napoli in second, with their run of one win in their last five meaning Luciano Spalleti’s side are nine points behind and 17 points behind leaders Juventus.

Wien’s group stage was a tricky one against Spartak Moscow, Glasgow Rangers and Villarreal but with two wins over Moscow and a 1-0 win over Rangers, Wien managed to sneak through into the knockout rounds.

Inter, however, are dropping down from the Champions League after last day heartbreak against PSV Eindhoven. All Inter needed to do was win and they’d be into the knockout rounds at the expense of Tottenham but with Inter drawing at home 1-1 and Spurs drawing 1-1, Inter were knocked out very late on.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be a big a margin as many suggest. The form of Wien will obviously play a factor, but Inter themselves aren’t spring chickens this season and could be caught out at times. 3-1 to the Italians.

Betting Tips

Inter are favourites for this clash so an away win carries very little risk, but the risk lays in the exact score line, with both teams will score. Wien will be intent on giving a good account of themselves and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action. 888sport have it as 23/2 when combined with an Inter 3-1 win.

These are decent(ish) odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, due to the status of the two sides. Home advantage should significantly be an important part of this game in this game and Inter to be leading at half time and ultimately take the win is quite likely, rated at 7/5 by 888sport.

Head to Head

This will be the third time these two have met in a competitive fixture, with the other two being in the 1990 edition of the old UEFA Cup. Rapid Wien managed to win the first leg 2-1 but a double from Nicola Berti and Jurgen Klinsmann sent Inter through with a 3-1 win after extra time.

  • Inter Milan have won the UEFA Cup/Europa League three times in their history with the first being in 1990/1991. The other two came shortly after in 93/94 and finally 97/98.
  • Rapid Wien have won an incredible 32 Austrian Championships and 14 Austrian Cups.
  • Wien’s home form has been as inconsistent as anything this season, picking up three wins, three draws and three losses in the Austrian Bundesliga this season.
  • Inter’s away form hasn’t been all too impressive either, with six wins, two draws and four losses in Serie A, conceding 11 and scoring just 14 in the process.
