Rangers vs Feyenoord Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 1-0.

European nights in Scotland and especially in Glasgow are always famous and always a sight to behold but will Rangers be able to make a game to remember for their fans against former Champions League winners Feyenoord?

Feyenoord will be seen as favourites for this game mainly due to the standard of their league and the perception of Scottish football, but home advantage could be enough to give Rangers that little extra boost.

Rangers once again had to go through the qualification process and managed to beat the likes of St Josephs, Nierderkorn, Midtjylland and Legia Warszawa.

Feyenoord, on the other hand, only had to go through two rounds of qualifying to get to the Europa League group stage, beating Dinamon Tbilisi and Hapoel Beer Sheva.

Rangers have made a good start to their SPFL season, winning three of their opening four games with the only loss coming against Celtic.

Feyenoord have only won one game so far this season, their recent game against Willem II, but have drawn every other game so far.

The Dutch club will be seen as favourites and that’s of no surprise, but Rangers won’t go down without a fight. A score draw, maybe 1-1, looks like it could be the best bet to go for in this game.

Betting Tips

These odds are long because on paper it seems like a long shot. Many will consider Feyenoord the better team and there’s nothing wrong with that, but Rangers will have home field advantage and that could be the difference between a loss and a point. A tight tied game is among the best online betting odds for the matchday. 888Sport have a correct score of 1-1 at 27/5.

These are lengthy odds for a situation that could easily happen because the home side have scored in all but three games this season, two of which being away from home. Home advantage should be a huge factor in this one and if Feyenoord take an early lead and Rangers fight back to gain a point, perhaps in the dying embers of the match, you can thank the Ibrox crowd and this bet is rated at 18/5 by 888sport.

Head to Head

Rangers and Feyenoord have faced off against each other on only two occasions, with Feyenoord winning one of those games and the only other one ending in a draw back in 2002.

  • Those games came in the old UEFA Cup back at the turn of the century in the last 16, with Feyenoord winning the second leg 3-2 after a draw in the first leg.
  • The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw, with goals from Shinji Ojo for the Dutch club giving them a lead before Barry Ferguson scored later on to level things up.
  • The second leg was far more exciting, with Neil McCann and Barry Ferguson scoring Rangers’ goals but goals from Bonaventure Kalou and a brace from Pierre Van Hooijdonk gave Feyenoord the win on the night and over the tie.
  • This also marks the first meeting as managers against one another for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam, who left Reading a few years ago and now is manager at the Dutch club, ironically the only one of the big three Dutch clubs he never played for (played for PSV in 1996-1998 and Ajax for a season in 2006).
