Score: 0-3.

The Europa League returns this week as Azerbaijani champions Qarabag face Spanish side Sevilla – who have won the competition a record five times.

Predictions

Qarabag only scrapped through to the group stages of this competition after edging out Northern Ireland champions Linfield on away goals.

The champions of Azerbaijan have been disappointing thus far in Europe and were eliminated in the Champions League qualifiers by Cypriot side APOEL.

Sevilla disappointingly exit the competition at the Round of 16 last year at the hands of Slavia Prague, having previously eliminated Lazio.

Now managed by Julen Lopetegui, the Andalusian club will be immediately among the favourites to lift the competition once more.

The visitors will be favourites to make a winning start to the group despite not possessing home advantage, as they hold superior form and quality over Qarabag.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-1 triumph for the Andalusian side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Sevilla are strong favourites to win this game but the value is found in them winning while not keeping a clean sheet. Qarabag have already scored 12 times in qualification matches this season and it is in defence, rather than attack, where their issues lie. This is among the best online betting odds for this round of action and Royal Panda have attractively priced it at 5/2.

Both of Qarabag’s defeats so far this campaign have come when they trailed at half time. That makes Sevilla to be ahead at the break and at full time particularly appealing, priced 13/10 by 888Sport.

Statistics

Head to Head

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly given the European exploits of both clubs in European competition, these two sides have never previously met before this season.

Stats

  • Sevilla’s five Europa League titles is a record in the competition.
  • The Andalusian club’s three successive titles between 2014 and 2016 was the first time a side had won a European title in three successive years since Bayern Munich in 1976.
  • Qarabag have won each of the past six Azerbaijani league titles.
  • Qarabag memorably drew twice against Atletico Madrid in the group stages of the 2017/18 Champions League.
