Porto vs Young Boys Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 2-1.

The Europa League returns this week and Porto will be one of the strongest sides in this season’s competition after surprisingly being eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers, and they start their campaign at home to Swiss side Young Boys.

Predictions

Porto are regulars in the Champions League – they made last season’s quarter-finals and the Round of 16 the previous year.

However, a surprise elimination against Russian side Krasnodar in the qualifiers this season means they have disappointingly dropped down into the Europa League.

This is a tough group with Scottish giants Rangers and Dutch club Feyenoord the other two sides competing, in an evenly matched quartet.

Young Boys were in the Champions League group stages last time out but elimination against Serbian giants Crvena Zvevda on away goals sees them fall into the Europa League.

The hosts will be favourites to get their campaign off to a winning start due to possessing home advantage, superior form and quality over Young Boys.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 3-1 triumph for the Portuguese side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Porto are back in form after a slow start to the season – they have won three successive league matches including a 2-0 win at title rivals Benfica. They have greater quality than Young Boys and will want to make this show – but the Swiss side are full of goals and also concede plenty – six went in across their two ties with Crvena Zvevda. A Porto win with over 2.5 goals in the game is 6/5 at 10Bet.

Linked into the previous bet, this is among the best online betting odds for the round of action as Young Boys have scored at least once in all nine matches they have played this season, while Porto have hit nine goals in their last three outings. 888Sport price it at 13/5.

Statistics

Head to Head

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly given the European exploits of both clubs in European competition, these two sides have never previously met before this season.

Stats

  • Young Boys appeared in last season’s Champions League group stages – defeating Juventus at home and drawing with Valencia.
  • After a 32-year wait, Young Boys have won successive titles in the Swiss top flight.
  • Porto have won five European titles in their history – including the UEFA Cup/Europa League trophies in 2003 and 2010.
  • Porto’s 2018 league title is their only crown since 2013, having won nine of the previous 11.
