Score: 0-4.

The Europa League group stages get underway this week and one of the more intriguing fixtures sees Austrian side Wolfsberger – at this stage for the first time in their history – make the trip over the border to face German side Monchengladbach.

Wolfsberger are at this stage of the competition for the first time in their history after finishing third in the Austrian top flight last season.

They have only ever previously played four matches in Europe – all coming in the 2015/16 campaign – they defeated Belarus side Shakhtyor Soligorsk before elimination against Borussia Dortmund in the qualification stages.

Monchengladbach are back in the Europa League for the first time since the 2016/17 campaign – they reached the Round of 32 after eliminating Fiorentina before going out on away goals to Schalke.

The German side have recently competed in the Champions League but are now back in Europe’s secondary competition after finishing fifth in the Bundesliga last season.

The hosts will be favourites to get their campaign off to a winning start due to possessing home advantage, superior form and quality over Wolfsberger.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-0 triumph for the German side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Each of Wolfsberger’s last two league games have been 1-0 wins while Monchengladbach’s first game of the season ended scoreless. This may be a cagey game with the away side sitting deep and Monchengladbach wary of the counter attack. Since goals aren’t expected, backing only a few of them is among the best online betting odds of the round. 888Sport price under 2.5 goals at 39/20.

Linked into the previous bet, the home side are favourites to win this game but the true value lies in them picking up the three points with a clean sheet. 10Bet have Gladbach to nil at 7/5.

Head to Head

Unsurprisingly given Wolfsberger’s lack of European experience, these two sides have never previously played a competitive match.

  • Monchenglabach have been crowned German champions on five occasions but their last league title came in 1977.
  • The German side lost the 1977 European Cup final against Liverpool while they won the UEFA Cup in both 1975 and 1979.
  • Wolfsberger have never won a competition outside of the Austrian second tier in 2012, and this is their first time in the European group stages.
  • Roma and Istanbul Basaksehir are the other two teams in this group.
