Europa League Lazio vs Sevilla
Lazio vs Sevilla Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 0-1.

The first leg of the Europa League knockout rounds  are played this week with this game in particular being one of the stand out ties, with Serie A’s  Lazio playing host to La Liga side Sevilla.

With both teams possessing top quality players, it’s almost impossible to predict quite how this game will pan out but if there’s anything that we’ve learnt from the Europa League in recent seasons it’s that anything is possible in any game.

Lazio come into this game sitting in fifth place in Serie A, just a matter of points away from challenging the likes of Napoli in second place, but they’ll know that a good run in the Europa League could set them up to challenge for the trophy itself and thus a place in next season’s Champions League.

Sevilla, on the other hand, are holding the final Champions League spot in Spain’s top division with Getafe, Alaves and Real Betis lagging behind them. After getting out of their Europa League group with wins over Standard Liege, Krasnodar and Akhisaspor, they’ll be one of the favourites to win the tournament.

Rome-based Lazio weren’t exactly inspiring during the Europa League group stages, losing to Eintracht Frankfurt and Limasoll while only beating Marseille over the two games they played.

The visitors were able to get out of their group with relative ease so now they will likely see this game as their first big test of whether they can live up to the tag of Europa League specialists.  Home advantage could tip the balance to a 2-1 Lazio win, however.

Betting Tips

Despite both team being quite good, you can’t quite put your finger on who’s favourite so that’s why a tight Lazio win after an-all square first half might be the way to go. Sevilla will be intent on getting back to Spain with either a win or an away goal so it may not be out of the question, and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action. 888sport have it as 24/5.

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, due to the fact Lazio have one of the most lethal strikers in all of Europe in the form of Ciro Immobile. Home advantage should benefit the Eagles in this game and the scoreline being level at the break before Lazio steal a win in the second half is a likely outcome, rated at 19/5 by 888sport.

Head to Head

This’ll be the first ever meeting between these two in a competitive fixture and it promises to be a great one at that.

  • Lazio’s form in Serie A has been sketchy to say the least, especially at home when they’ve lost three and drawn three from their 12 games at the Stadio Olimpico.
  • Sevilla’s away form has been much worse than perhaps anyone expected, picking up just three wins in 12, losing five including recent losses against Celta Vigo, Real Madrid and Atletico Bilbao.
  • Lazio’s home form in Europe isn’t as bad as Serie A, but their loss to Frankfurt in front of their own fans was their first at home in Europe since March 2016 when Sparta Praha beat them 3-0.
  • On the road in Europe, Sevilla’s form doesn’t look any better. This season alone they lost away at Krasnodar and away in Belgium to Standard Liege, so this may be the most unpredictable game of this Europa League knockout round.
