Lazio vs Marseille

Thursday November 8th, 17:55

The Europa League returns this week with a Group H clash between Lazio and Marseille on Thursday evening in a game the hosts are favourites to win, with the French side desperately in need of a victory.

Predictions

Marseille reached the final of last year’s Europa League but a defeat in Rome will see the French side eliminated in this season’s group stages.

They have lost each of their two home matches in the group – including against Thursday’s opponents last time out – while only managed a draw away to Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

Indeed, Marseille have only won two of their last seven games in all competitions and go into this match having lost three successive games, with boss Rudi Garcia under pressure.

Lazio are on course to progress through the group despite a shock 4-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday two, having beaten Apollon home and won in France.

The Rome-based club have won four of their last five games in all competitions and a victory here would see them progress, although they remain three points behind Frankfurt ahead of this tie.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be all plain-sailing – a repeat of their 3-1 triumph from the last matchday would be a likely outcome for Lazio here.

Betting Tips

These two sides have produced plenty of goals in their games to date this season – Marseille have seen 54 goals fly in across their 15 games across Ligue 1 and Europa League, while for Lazio that number is 42. Four goals were shared between the two last time out and expect plenty more of the same here, with Lazio looking to take initiative due to having home advantage and the visitors desperate for a win.

The Italian striker has already notched up an impressive nine goals for the campaign as he aims to replicate his remarkable 41 from last season. He is someone who you can never rule out and his most recent outing this weekend saw him strike twice against SPAL. The 28-year-old will once more be looking to make his mark in European competition and Marseille’s defence has been porous all season.

Statistics

Head to Head

These two sides have met on two previous occasions prior to this season, both coming in the 2005 Intertoto Cup campaign. Marseille managed to hold Lazio to a 1-1 draw in Rome before advancing through with a comfortable 3-0 victory in France. The Italian side extracted revenge a fortnight ago in this group campaign thanks to a 3-1 win.

Stats

  • Only Paris Saint-Germain have scored more Ligue 1 goals this season than Marseille’s 22 in 12 games, but Garcia’s side have shipped 21 in that same timeframe – only basement side Guingamp have conceded more.
  • Lazio have won seven of their 11 Serie A games to date but have lost the other four, meaning they lie fifth in the standings and 10 points from leaders Juventus.
  • Despite reaching last year’s final, Marseille only won once in their eight matches not at their home ground – a victory at Athletic Club Bilbao.
