Frankfurt vs Donetsk Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 1-4.

The second leg of the Europa League knockout rounds are played this week and although there is a clear advantage to one of these teams, Frankfurt vs Donetsk looks like it could be one of the more trickier games to predict and will be definitely be one of the matches to keep an eye on.

With the talent in both sides and the exciting first leg in the bag, this could be the most exciting second leg of the entire Europa League round, but with the excitement comes the unpredictability of picking a favourite.

Frankfurt are on a run of four consecutive draws in all competitions – including the 2-2 draw away at Donetsk last week – keeping just one clean sheet in the process.

Donetsk haven’t lost since November 7th (when they got battered by Manchester City 6-0) so they come into this game with incredible form, although the game against Frankfurt was their first since December.

Frankfurt defeated Marseille, Lazio and Limassol in the group stages without dropping a single point and conceding just five goals.

Donetsk dropped down from the Champions League after finishing third in a group containing Man City, Lyon and Hoffenheim.

After the first leg, Frankfurt are favourites for this one but given their recent run of draws, it wouldn’t be a shock to see yet another draw which the Germans wouldn’t be upset with. 1-1 looks a real possibility.

Betting Tips

Frankfurt will be favourites for this clash so a home win carries little risk, but a draw would be more likely with a repeat of the first leg seemingly possible, while it is also highly likely that both teams will score. Donetsk know they will need to come out of the blocks early on so they will almost certainly score, and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action.

The Germans know that they won’t need to win this game to go through, while Donetsk need to come out swinging. Home advantage should significantly shift the momentum in this game and the scoreline being level at the break before a few more goals from either side in the second half is a likely outcome.

Head to Head

Excluding the first leg of this tie, these two have only met twice before in their history. Back in 1980, these two met in the UEFA Cup First Round with Donetsk taking the first leg 1-0 before Frankfurt won the second leg 3-0.

  • Frankfurt currently sit in 6th place in the Bundesliga but sit a long way off the Champions League places, with eight points separating them from Leipzig in 4th.
  • Donetsk’s domestic season doesn’t start up until after this tie, but they sit top of the Ukraine Premier Division, losing just once all season – away to Kyiv.
  • While Frankfurt didn’t drop a single point in the Europa League group stage, they have a bit of an inconsistent home form in the Bundesliga. They’ve won 5 and lost 3 of their 10 games at home.
  • Donetsk’s only loss in their domestic competition so far this season has been away from home and their only other loss away was in the Champions League against Man City, while they drew against Lyon and beat Hoffenheim.
