Feyenoord vs Porto Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 2-0.

Two former European Cup winners face off in the Europa League in a game that wouldn’t look out of place in the Champions League and contains two sides who could be considered winners of the competition later in May.

Two sides who will be considered evenly matched face off even though you’d more than likely expect Porto to be the bookies favourites considering how they got to the Europa League.

Feyenoord made it through the Europa League qualifying stages against Hapoel Beer Sheva and Dinamo Tbilisi, before losing to Rangers in their first group game.

Porto, on the other hand, dropped down from the Champions League qualifiers after losing in the 3rd qualifying round against Krasnodar, despite winning the first leg 1-0 away from home.

Feyenoord’s opening game defeat against Rangers put them bottom of Group G in these early stages but only on goals scored because Young Boys managed to get one against Porto.

Porto’s win against Young Boys at home was done and dusted in the first half, with all three goals scored in the game scored before the half hour mark.

The away side will probably be favourites for this game with the bookies but if you want to be somewhat cautious, a score draw might be the best route to go down for this game.

Betting Tips

Both sides have the capability of scoring goals and letting a few in, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a 2-2 here. It seems like a smart bet considering the odds and considering the talent on show, and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action. 888sport have it as 11/1.

These are long odds for an outcome and a set of circumstances that might actually be quite realistic, regardless of what you think the final score will be. Would it be out of question to imagine both teams being level at the break, maybe a few goals in the second half and for them to draw the game? It doesn’t seem too out of this world, with this bet rated at 22/5 by 888sport.

Head to Head

Feyenoord and Porto have only ever faced off against one another on two occasions, with Porto winning the first game and the two sides playing out a draw in the second encounter.

  • The first game came in October 1993 when Porto won the Champions League second round tie 1-0 at home, with Domingo Paciencia scoring the only goal in the final minutes of the game.
  • The second leg resulted in a better result for Feyenoord as they held the Portuguese club to a 0-0 draw, despite defender – and future Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen manager – Peter Bosz’s red card earlier in the game
  • It’s 21 years since Porto played in a game in the Netherlands, with the Portuguese club losing 2-1 to Ajax in the second game of the 1998/1999 group stage.
  • Managers Jaap Stam and Sergio Conceicao were once teammates at Lazio during the 2003/2004 season before Stam moved across Serie A to join AC Milan.
