Eintracht Frankfurt have it all to do to save their Europa League campaign after losing to Benfica in the first leg, but two away goals give the Bundesliga side hope of a comeback.

After not losing a competitive game between December and April, Eintracht have now lost their last two – starting with the 4-2 reverse in Portugal. That was followed up by a 3-1 home defeat to Augsburg, and the fine work of Adi Hutter and his team this season is in danger of coming undone.

Indeed, not only is Eintracht’s continental future in doubt, they face a fight to hold on to a Champions League place domestically too. As things stand, the Eagles would go straight into the group stage for next season’s competition, but they have only a point’s cushion from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Benfica have wonderkid Joao Felix to thank for their first leg lead, the teenager grabbing a hat-trick to announce his arrival on the continental stage. Luka Jovic netted for Eintracht – of course – and Goncalo Pacienca’s late second keeps the tie somewhat alive, but it’s definitely advantage to the away side.

A Benfica goal in Germany would all-but settle the tie and Felix’s form – he netted against Vitoria Setubal at the weekend as well – means they’ll feel confident of getting at least one. He’s now got 12 goals for the season, and is still only 19.

Jovic – who this week has been linked to Real Madrid for next season – will be the forward Eintracht look to for goals and they’re going to need at least two of them. If Benfica score, Eintracht will need three. The likes of Ante Rebic, Sebastien Haller and Pacienca will be needed to take some of the burden off Jovic’s shoulders.

But after they shared six goals in the first leg, it’s hard to see this being a tame affair – and hard to see only one team scoring. Benfica can go to Germany and get a draw to go through to the last four, with a 1-1 final score looking possible.

Betting Tips

Any draw will do for Benfica – and top sportsbooks will be well aware of that. There’s also plenty of goals in both teams, with Eintracht claiming 57 in 29 league games and Benfica a staggering 81. 888Sport have the draw and both teams to score at 18/5.

Felix is the young man of the moment, and doesn’t turn 20 until November. His first season in the Benfica first team could end in a league and Europa League double, and another goal here would go towards the latter. He’s 13/5 to score anytime at Unibet.

Head to Head

The first leg of this fixture was the first time the teams met.

  • Defeat in Lisbon was Eintracht’s first of the season in the Europa League.
  • Felix’s three goals in the first leg were his first in the any senior European competition.
  • Benfica have only won twice before in Germany – both in the Europa League, first against Stuttgart in 2010-11 and then against Bayer Leverkusen in 2012-13.
  • Benfica have won the first leg of a European tie 57 times but the last time they won the first leg and failed to go through was against Borussia Dortmund in the 2016-17 Champions League.
