The match is over.
Score: 0-2.

Two teams with a lot of interesting talent face off in this clash in Russia with both sides looking to bounce back from their disappointing start to this Europa League campaign.

For the neutral this looks like it could be a tough game to call considering the reputation of the two clubs and the results from the opening group games not exactly the kind to fill you up with confidence.

Hosts CSKA had a nightmare start to the tournament, kicking off with a horrendously bad 5-1 defeat away at Ludogorets.

Espanyol fared slightly better in their opener, but couldn’t take home all three points as they could only manage a draw at home to Ferencvaros.

CSKA’s start to the Russian Premier League season has been largely good but with a few poor results thrown in, with losses against KS Samara and Spartak Moscow the two stand out disappointments.

Espanyol haven’t had the best of starts to their La Liga campaign either, picking up just one win against Eibar out of six games.

The two are quite evenly matched and basing it solely on their domestic form, you may be worth backing the Russians for this one if you’re wanting to pick a side to win as opposed to a first goal scorer. They can edge it 2-1

Betting Tips

While it may seem a bit of a stretch to back CSKA fully after their 5-1 loss against Ludogorets, they’ve got the confidence and the wins from their domestic form to back them in this one, so it’s worth siding with them if you really want to, and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action. 888sport have a 2-1 win for the home side as 8/1.

A 2-1 win seems like a safe score line to go with – hence the previous tip – and it opens up the possibility of a both teams to score bet, which seems a good bet to go with as well considering these rather high odds. You’d be regretting not siding with this bet if both teams do score because it’s unusual to see such high odds for something that’s rather likely, and this bet is rated at 18/5 by 888sport.

Head to Head

This will be the first time these two sides have met in a competitive fixture ever in their history, and their history against Spanish and Russian sides mean this could be a cracking fixture.

  • CSKA Moscow have never lost in a home game against Spanish opposition, winning twice and drawing on three occasions.
  • Espanyol have played a Russian side just once in their Europa League/UEFA Cup history, beating Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0 back in 2005/2006.
  • CSKA’s most recent games against Spanish opposition resulted in two memorable wins against Real Madrid, 1-0 at home and 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabau last season.
  • This is actually Espanyol’s first venture in the UEFA Europa League, making their debut in this version of the competition having last played in the UEFA Cup in 2007, losing to Sevilla on penalties in the final.
