Chelsea are in pole position to progress to the next round of the Europa League after securing a 2-1 victory away at Malmo in the first leg of this last 32 clash. The Blues are once again favourites to triumph in West London and secure their place in the next round.

Malmo have reached this stage of European football for the first time since the 1978-79 season, when they lost the European Cup final to Nottingham Forest.
The Swedish club only just scraped through their group stage with two wins from their six outings – although both of those victories came against Turkish giants Besiktas.

Chelsea cruised through the group stage with 16 points from six games against BATE, Vidi and PAOK and are among the favourites for the competition.
Maurizio Sarri’s side are excelling in cup competitions this season – they are in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup and in the EFL Cup final this campaign.

The hosts will be favourites to make it six European wins out of seven this season and now possess home advantage, and they also possess vastly superior form and quality over Malmo.

The home side are favourites to win this game and it should be relatively comfortable – a 3-1 triumph for the West London side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

All seven of Malmo’s away matches in the Europa League this season would have had this outcome – including wins at Midtylland and Besiktas, alongside a draw against Sarpsborg and a defeat at Genk, while three of Chelsea’s six Europa League group games were won 1-0. This is among the best online betting odds for this round of action.

Malmo have lost just one of their seven European away matches this season and whilst their assignment at Stamford Bridge will be their toughest to date, they have a real opportunity to take something from this clash. Chelsea are in patchy form and Malmo could get a result on the night and still be eliminated from the competition.

Head to Head

These two sides had never previously met before Chelsea’s 2-1 win in Malmo last week.

  • Malmo are currently in their off-season having finished last season third in the Swedish top flight, with next season’s competition getting underway in April.
  • Chelsea are unbeaten in 11 home matches in the competition in their history, winning nine of those matches.
  • The Blues won the Europa League six seasons ago when they defeated Benfica 2-1 in the final after extra time, one year after their Champions League triumph.
  • Malmo are coached by Uwe Rosler, who starred as a striker for Manchester City and previously managed in London with Championship club Brentford.
