The match is over.
Score: 4-1.

With a place in the Champions League next season at stake for Arsenal and the chance for Eden Hazard to (potentially) sign off of his Chelsea career with a European title, this Europa League final is perhaps the biggest in a number of years.

Given their respective European and domestic campaigns, this one will be a tough one to predict. Both teams have match winners who can turn a game in an instant, and both have the potential to capitulate with equal effectiveness.

Chelsea finished thid in the Premier League after picking up six points from the last four games, remaining unbeaten in all competitions since April 18th.

Arsenal picked up just four points from their last four games, winning their only game on the final day away at Burnley, a run which caused them to miss out on the top four.

The Blues drew against Manchester United, Burnley and Leicester before beating Watford 3-0, while Arsenal beat Burnley but drew against Brighton and lost against Crystal Palace and Leicester.

A win for Chelsea would continue their unbeaten run in the Europa League this season – only drawing twice – while a win for Arsenal would give them a record of 11 wins, one draw and two losses.

The South London club are probably slight favourites ahead of their North London counter parts, but it won’t be a blow out. A 2-1 Chelsea win or a Chelsea win on penalties will probably be the best and safest score lines to choose from.

Betting Tips

Chelsea are slight favourites, but you can still get good odds on a tight score line – 888sport have it as 15/2. Arsenal will keep the game tight, perhaps looking to play on the counter attack and could even go into the half time interval in the lead, but ultimately Chelsea will come out on top.

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect. Arsenal have enough fire power to take an early lead, inviting Chelsea on to them but if they don’t move out after half time, it could spell trouble for the Gunners. Chelsea could wear Arsenal down and hit them in the second half, perhaps even taking them deep into extra time before winning the final, with this bet rated at 24/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

These two sides have played 197 games against each other, with Arsenal winning 77 of them, Chelsea winning 63 and 53 draws being played out from 1907 up until this Europa League final.

  • The first time these sides met was in 1907 when Arsenal – then Woolwich Arsenal before moving across the Thames to the Islington area of North London – fell 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
  • Arsenal would win the Stamford Bridge fixture 2-1 the following year while the first game to take place at Highbury was a 1-1 draw in December of 1919.
  • This’ll be the third game in European competition that they’ve faced each other, with the first two coming in the 2004 Champions League quarter final when the first leg at Stamford Bridge was 1-1 and the second leg at Highbury finished 2-1 with Wayne Bridge scoring a late winner to send Chelsea through.
  • Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0 early on in this current Premier League season, however that was their first win against the Gunners in six attempts, with Arsenal winning on three of those occasions. That included an FA Cup win in 2017.
