Celtic and RB Leipzig lock horns at Celtic Park on Thursday evening with the hosts knowing defeat could see them eliminated from the Europa League.

Back-to-back Europa League losses have left Celtic back in third place in Group B, though a victory on Thursday evening will see them go level on points with RB Leipzig. The Bhoys have definitely looked second best in their matches against the Germans and top side FC Salzburg so far in the competition. But Brendan Rodgers will be encouraged by their recent resurgent form, with back-to-back five-goal thrashings handed out to Dundee and Hearts in the Scottish Premier League.

The visitors, led by Ralf Rangnick, will rubberstamp their spot in the knockout rounds of the competition if they beat Celtic and Rosenborg don’t beat Salzburg. If they do win, then Celtic can also be eliminated if the Austrians pick up a point against the Norwegians.

Leipzig are unbeaten in ten matches in all competitions and haven’t even conceded in their last six. We’re going for a 2-0 away win.

Betting Tips

Much is made of big European nights at Celtic Park and Brendan Rodgers’ men will need that atmosphere if they’re to get the result they need on Thursday night – but it will be a real challenge.

RB Leipzig have kept six clean sheets on the trot and the Bhoys never even threatened to beat Yann Mvogo in Die Bullen goal last time out.

Celtic may be in good goalscoring form domestically but Europe is a different matter altogether and 5/2 for the Germans to win to nil offers good value.

Leipzig’s Timo Werner is in excellent form in front of goal, netting four times in his last two Bundesliga matches. But the 22-year-old tends to be rested for Europa League encounters and that could happen again in Glasgow.

In his absence, Brazilian youngster Matheus Cunha has taken over the goalscoring mantle, scoring against both Rosenborg and Celtic.

Cunha also scored in RBL’s eye-catching 3-0 away win at Hertha Berlin last week and his form makes him a solid bet to break the deadlock on Thursday at 7/1.

Head to Head

Celtic and RB Leipzig’s sole previous meeting was a fortnight ago at the Red Bull Arena in Germany, with the hosts recording a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The visitors had two defensive lapses to blame for the goals. First, Matheus Cunha was allowed space to fire into the back of the net just after the half-hour mark. Then, just minutes later, Bruma stroked in a second from a Marcelo Saracchi cross.

  • Only Kai Havertz of Leverkusen and Munas Dabbur of Salzburg have had more shots on target than RB Leipzig’s Matheus Cunha (6).
  • Defender Dedryck Boyata is the only player from Celtic or RB Leipzig to have completed over 150 passes in the competition so far (171).
  • Celtic have scored 23 goals in their last five domestic fixtures – an average of 4.6 a game.
  • RB Leipzig have the best defensive record in Germany’s Bundesliga, conceding just nine times in ten matches.
  • Celtic have won their last three Europa League matches at Celtic Park without conceding a goal.
