Benfica vs Eintracht Europa League

Score: 4-2.

In-form Eintracht Frankfurt travel to Benfica for their Europa League last eight meeting having not tasted defeat since December, some 15 games ago.

A first European trophy since 1980 isn’t out of the question for Eintracht Frankfurt, and considering their incredible form, practically unmatched anywhere in world football, perhaps they should be considered among the favourites to win the Europa League.

Bookies still rate Chelsea, Napoli, Arsenal and Sevilla ahead of Adi Hutter’s charges but you have to go back to a few days before Christmas to find the last defeat for Frankfurt, against Bayern Munich on December 22. And they’ve won the last five as well, including a sterling victory at Inter in the last round of this competition.

By any other measure Benfica’s form would be pretty good too but a defeat to Sporting at the start of April means they’ve only won four of their last six, relegation stuff compared to Frankfurt. Benfica are neck-and-neck with Porto domestically, so any defeat in the league or in Europe could be catastrophic.

Frankfurt’s form has put them into contention to qualify for the Champions League via the Bundesliga but success in this competition would deliver the same, and give the club trophy cabinet a new addition too. The days of reaching European Cup finals against Real Madrid may be long gone, but this has the makings of a classic team and a trophy would top it off.

Benfica beat Dinamo Zagreb to reach the last eight, losing 1-0 in Croatia before a 3-0 extra time win in Portugal and, like Frankfurt, are only considered outsiders for the Europa League thanks to the Premier League and La Liga teams left in. But they have the quality and the resolve to beat any opponent on their day.

Both teams settled their previous tie in the second leg and that’s likely going to be the case here too. A draw – 1-1 – would tilt the balance towards Frankfurt, but leave it all to play for in Germany.

Betting Tips

Frankfurt edged past Inter by one away goal over their two legs, and while Benfica’s winning margin was a little bigger, they needed Dinamo to go down to 10 men before racking up the goals. But they do both have goals in them – from Haris Seferovic and Luka Jovic respectively – so they can each score in a tight game. 888Sport price the draw and BTTS at 33/10.

Jovic, on loan at Benfica from Frankfurt, has plundered 25 goals in 40 games this season for club and country and his form has seen him linked with myriad clubs – Liverpool just the latest. He’s 7/4 to score anytime against his parent club at 10Bet.

Head to Head

The first leg between Benfica and Frankfurt will be the first-ever meeting of the two clubs.

  • Benfica have unhappy memories of playing German teams this season – they met Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stage and lost 5-1 in Munich and 2-0 in Lisbon.
  • Frankfurt are – perhaps surprisingly given the might of Bayern – the last German team in Europe this season.
The only time Frankfurt played Portuguese opposition before, they were eliminated from this competition on away goals by Porto, after a 5-5 aggregate draw in 2014.
  • While Jovic is on loan at Frankfurt from Benfica, Benfica striker Seferovic is no stranger to the opposition either – he scored 16 times for the club in three seasons before moving to Portugal in 2017.
