Benfica vs Dinamo Zagreb Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 3-0.

The second leg of the Europa League knockouts are played this week and after the first leg win from Zagreb, this game will be intense, feisty and incredible as Liga Nos leaders Benfica look to claw back their deficit to advance.

After the first leg, anything is a possibility in this tie but the majority of neutrals expected a win for Benfica in the opener but with their imperious home form, the same people will likely side with them once again.

Zagreb’s 1-0 win in the first leg puts them in pole position in the tie after winning the Croatian Premier League and will set up to frustrate Benfica in their backyard, sitting deep and maybe – if they’re feeling lucky – hit them on the counter attack. It worked in the first leg, no reason to suggest it won’t work again.

Once again, Benfica sit atop of Liga Nos ahead of Porto but the 1-0 loss against Zagreb was their first reverse since a 3-1 defeat against Porto back in January.
Zagreb managed to get through a group of Fenerbahce, Anderlecht and Trnava, while they also overturned a 2-1 first leg deficit in the first knockout round against Plzen.

The hosts dropped down from the Champions League and managed to get past Galatasaray in the first knockout round of the Europa League, winning 1-2 in the first leg and drawing 0-0 in the second.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be a big a margin as many suggest and certainly no repeat of the first leg – a 3-1 triumph for Benfica would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Benfica will be favourites for this clash so a home win carries very little risk while it is also highly likely that both teams will score. Zagreb will be intent on giving their travelling fans a moment to savour and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action. 888sport have it as 13/5 when combined with the home win.

If Zagreb do set out to frustrate Benfica then they can get to the interval with their first leg lead intact. But Benfica have a passionate home support and greater strength in their squad, so they can win by the end of the game. 888Sport price that sequence of events at 13/4.

Head to Head

Excluding the first leg, Zagreb have never beaten Benfica in a competitive match. Benfica have won two of the games 2-0 while the first game between the two, back in 1980, finished 0-0.

  • Excluding the first leg, Benfica haven’t lost in their past nine game and drew just once in that time, away at Galatasaray in the last round.
  • Domestically, Zagreb have only lost once away from home and that came in November, a 1-0 loss at Rijeka.
  • Benfica’s home form has been superb, winning nine of their 11 games and losing just once. The only loss came against Belenenses, back in October.
  • This should be a tight game judging back the first leg and Zagreb have only conceded three goals on their travels domestically while Benfica have scored 41 in front of their own fans.
