Arsenal vs BATE Europa League

The match is over.
Score: 3-0.

The second legs of the Europa League knockout rounds are played this week and while the first leg shock of a BATE win in Belarus was enough to send Arsenal social media into a frenzy, the Gunners will still be favourites to overturn the one goal first leg deficit

Despite the first leg loss, Arsenal will be favourites to win this game and advance comfortably, which does seem like the most likely of outcomes.

Arsenal’s home form in the Premier League has been more or less impeccable this season, losing just once, which happened to be the first game of the season against Manchester City. As for the Europa League, they only dropped points at home against Sporting Lisbon, winning their other two games.

BATE domestic season is over right now, but they only lost once away from home in the Europa League campaign, a 3-1 loss to Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Gunners were heavy favourites for their Europa League group and comfortably finished top ahead of Sporting Lisbon, Qarabag and Vorskla.

The visitors were dumped out of the Champions League qualification rounds to PSV Eindhoven, but just escaped their Europa League group with three wins and three losses.

The home side are favourites to turn this tie around despite losing in Belarus, with the Gunners scoring five goals in the group stages at home and conceding just two – both of which coming in the first game against Vorskla. They might not get five here but they can win 4-0.

Betting Tips

Arsenal should be favourites for this clash so a home win is likely to carry very little risk while you wouldn’t be surprised if they pumped BATE once again, like they did last season. BATE will be intent on holding on to their slim advantage and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action.

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, due to the result earlier this month and due to the fact that Arsenal have been notorious for having slow first halves. Home advantage should significantly shift the momentum in this game in favour of the North London side and the scoreline being level at the break before Arsenal pull away in the second half is a likely outcome.

Head to Head

These two sides have never before faced each other. The return leg will take place in a fortnight’s time in Glasgow.

  • A win for Arsenal would be a return to the same pattern of form that they’ve shown as of late, trading wins and losses regularly. Their last seven fixtures have gone ‘Loss, Win, Loss, Win, Loss, Win, Loss’ so by the law of averages, a win is due next.
  • BATE stormed to the Belarus First Division title last season, finishing top by nine points but did crash out of the Europa League group stages in part thanks to an aggregate record against Arsenal of 10-2 in favour of the Gunners.
  • The away side’s road form in 2018 was fairly impressive, winning 11 of 15 games and conceding 15 goals while scoring 25.
  • Arsenal have been strong in front of their own fans this season but they have lost twice at home in the two domestic cup competitions against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, so maybe cups are their Emirates Kryptonite?
