Sweden vs Spain Euro 2020 qualifiers

The match is over.
Score: 1-1.

Two very good teams face off against one another in a battle that could decide whether or not the hosts qualify for the tournament, seeing as Spain may already be planning for their campaign next summer by the time kick off rolls around.

Spain will be favourites for this game but Sweden will have more to play for after Spain’s qualification was sealed following their game against Norway over the weekend, so maybe a Sweden win isn’t too far out of the question.

The hosts’ campaign hasn’t been all that consistent although they did start their group stage off with two wins and a draw, with that draw being away from home in nearby Norway.

Spain have been lights out in qualification so far, taking maximum points from Norway, Malta, Faroe Islands, Romania and Sweden out of their six games.

Sweden beat Romania and Malta in their first and third games of the campaign before falling to a 3-0 defeat against Spain, while beating the Faroe Islands and only managing a 1-1 draw with Norway in their second meeting.

If Sweden manage to beat Spain, it’ll be their first victory over La Roja in over 13 years, with the last win coming in October of 2006.

Spain will be favourites, but don’t be too sure that they’ll come away with all three points. If you are looking for a Spain win, a 2-1 win may be enough but a both teams to score bet could be the safest option to go with.

Head to Head

These two nations have met on plenty of occasions with Spain coming out on top six times, Sweden winning a respectable three games and the draw being the final result on four occasions.

  • The first game was back in 1950 and resulted in a Sweden win, with the significance being that this game was the 1950 FIFA World Cup third place playoff, with the Swedes winning and getting the bronze medal.
  • Spain would have to wait until 1968 to get their first win over Sweden, a 3-1 win in a friendly with the legendary Amancio scoring a brace.
  • The biggest win was in 1998 when Spain won 4-0 thanks to goals from Raul, Etxeberria and a brace from Fernando Morientes, with even Henrik Larsson being unable to get in on the action.
  • Prior to this campaign, the last game was played in 2008 when Spain won 2-0 with goals from David Villa and Fernando Torres getting the goals at Euro 2008, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring the equaliser in the first half.
